Akeydas Yitzchak - עקדת יצחק - Part III

According to the CHIDA(?), Akedas Yitzchok was on Yom Kippur

As is brought down in Talmud Yerushalmi (Ta’anit Chapter two), HaShem told Avraham Avinu: you saw the ram trying to untangle his horns from the thicket – but in the end he arrived on the altar, the purpose for which he was ultimately created.  Just like this ram tried hither and there to become free – your offspring will go through many trials and tribulations, which they will have to contend with but ultimately they will be freed from all of them.
So here we have the remedy to the Jewish people’s problems – all the way back since creation.
Yitzchok ran to his father (See ‎9 in the References Appendix) but when he realised that there’s no lamb coming up with them, all his limbs were shaking.  He strengthened himself and stoically joined his father in fulfilling his G-Dly mission –as is alluded to in the repeated verse “and they both went together”.
Question: Yitzchok only died once but throughout the long Jewish history many people lived Al Kiddush HaShem like the Hasmoneans, Marranos Cantonists, Refuseniks, to name but a few?
Yitzchok’s resolve in face of such as test, resulted in his having sacrifice seared into their DNA; his progeny became infused with a strength of faith when all throughout the generations we have to face the impossible choice between living a dead faith or dying Al Kiddush haShem.
The wood
Avraham took with him wood, as is clearly written that he chopped wood.  When they arrived at the foot of the mountain, Avraham took the wood off the ass’s back and placed it on his son’s shoulders.  The Midrash quips “like the man on death row carrying the crucifix on his shoulder” (Rabbah Bereishis Chapter 56).
Ma-acheles
A knife – as we can see that he threw his arm to grab hold of the Ma-acheles.
The Midrash says that the word “Ma-acheles” is not mentioned anywhere else in the Torah.  Why then was the word “Sakin” not used? They answer that this alludes to the merit that we the Jewish people have since the time when Avraham Avinu wanted to slaughter his son as an up offering to HaShem.  The word Ma-acheles is etymologically connected to the word “Ma-achal” = food, as if we ‘eat’ from this merit up until this day (Rabbah Bereishis Chapter 56).
Where did the fire come from?
The journey to the Akeyda:
The Soton accosted them on the way to Har HaMoriyoh and first tried to talk to him, then to his son and then put a number of obstacles in their way to stop them from reaching their destination
Finding the place -
HaShem said to Avraham “go to the place that I will show you”; when you will see my Holy Presence = Shechinah, this will be your sign where to go to.  Avrohom Avinu saw a cloud on top of one of the mountains, which wasn’t visible to the two servants Eliezer and Yishmael. Apparently, the cloud resulted from the smoke that rose from a fire that was burning there ([i])
How to delegate
Rabbi Yechezkel Abramsky ZTz”L explains why Avrohom Ovinu placed the wood on Yitzchok’s shoulders, whilst he himself took the fire and the knife.  Avrohom Ovinu felt that his responsibility to carry out HaShem’s directive would be diminished (?) if he let Yitzchok carry the fire and the knife – the two items that weren’t readily available on the mountain.  There was plenty of wood, so even if Yitzchak misplaces it, they’ll be able to procure replacement wood locally.
Avraham built the altar, as is written “Vayiven es HaMizbe-ach” – again we can see the letter Heh preceding the word Mizbe-ach, to allude that this altar is the one which is famous from before.  Odom horishon offered his Atonement on this Mizbe-ach.  It seems that over time the Mizbe-ach fell into disrepair and therefore Avraham had to re-build it (Bavli Sanhedrin 38/2).
Kayin and Hevel also offered their presents to HaShem on the same Altar, as did Noah after the flood.  He would have travelled all the way from the Kurdish mountains to Yerusholayim, a distance of about 1,600km…

Akeydas Yitzchak - עקדת יצחק - Part IV

Yaakov Avinu took those stones and shaped a half circle round his head for protection and overnight they became one – alluding that after the long dark night of Galus, all the Tribes will unify – and Yaakov offered oil on this stone that he upturned into a vertical altar.
The Akeyda:
In a way, the Akeyda was a precursor of many instances when the Jewish people faced total annihilation and were saved at the last moment – whether in Egypt or under Haman, during the Greek-Assyrian reign of terror or WWII…
Yitzchak stretched out his throat so his father shouldn’t have to ([i])and raised his eyes heavenward and asked his father in a soft voice to tie him up, so as to prevent him from inadvertently moving his limbs, which may result in hitting his father or becoming disqualified.
Rabbi Moshe of Savran: A Mal-ach was created from Avrohom Avinu’s fulfilling the commandment.  When one does the Mitzvah, apart from physically carrying out HaShem’s command, there are other effects that come about in higher spheres.  In this case, the angel that came to stop Avrohom Avinu was the same-self Mal-ach that was created by the Mitzvah of just putting Yitzchok on the altar.  This is also the answer to Balaam’s question to HaShem, why when it came to rescue Yitzchok He sent an angle, whilst when He commanded Avraham about the Akeyda He came so-called in person.
The angels cried when they saw what was happening and their tears fell into Yitzchok’s eyes.  This had an impact on his vision and when he reached the age of 14o years he was already blind.
So did Yitzchok die at the hand of his father or not?
According to one Midrash (Tanya Rabosi in the name of a Midrash Agadah) that Avraham Avinu did carry out HaShem’s will completely and then offered the ram, after HaShem sprinkled dew of revival (Tal Shel Techiyoh) on Yitzchok’s ashes.
The journey from the Akeyda:
Now that Yitzchok had not been offered, Avrohom started having qualms about his son’s age – he was by then an “Old Bochur” of 37!  Just then a message reached Avraham’s ears (according to Rashi, this was Ru-ach haKodesh) that a granddaughter by the name of Rivka was born to his brother in Choron – three years before.
Yitzchok Avinu tells HaShem: “Palga Alay – Palga Aloch”
It is no coincidence why “Ben Zion” = Gematrya Yitzchok, as it alludes to the place where he was going to give his life up for HaShem.
Matan Torah: The Shofar (horn) that was heard during HaShem’s descent and ascent on Mount Sinai was taken from this same self ram, according to Rabbi Yehudah ben Asher, a brother of the Ba’al haTurim (Orach Chaym Siman 417) it was the left hand horn as is brought down in Yalkut Shimoni (Isaiah Remez 436)

Akeydas Yitzchak - עקדת יצחק - Part II

4)            Shofar from the ram
The Teki’os
Events:
The time of Creation: Mishnah in Avot, enumerates the ten things that were created Erev Shabbos at twilight and one of them is the Ram that was offered on the altar in Yitzchok’s stead.
The Mishnah in Avot (Perek 5) also explains how it took twenty generations since creation, until Avraham Avinu came on the scene and made it known to the whole world that there is a Boss to the Palace – יש מנהיג לבירה
The Soton would not have any of it and so when it came the time that Soroh Imenu finally gave birth to her only son at the age of 90, he waited for an opportunity to slander this holy family.
Vayigomel: The Midrash tells us that the Soton came before HaShem and complained that although Avrohom Avinu prepared a festive meal when his son was born, to which he called all the great people of his generation, he didn’t offer up any offering to HaShem!
HaShem retorted: you will see when how I ask him to offer this same-self son up for me and he will do so without hesitation.
HaShem speaks to Avrohom:
Avraham Avinu received a nightly vision (PDE 31) and says to him “take your son”
Avraham answered: I have two sons, HaShem answered “your only son”
Avraham answered: both are their mother’s only son, HaShem answered “the one you like”
Avraham answered: I like them both, only then did HaShem answer “Yitzchok”
Rashi explains that this way Avraham would be rewarded even more, as he fulfilled the Mitzvah that was given to him in so many words.
First reaction:
Avrohom Avinu faced many obstacles in his quest to fulfil this last and hardest test.
He had to content with his feelings as a father, as an old man who waited and prayed so long to see this child grow up.  However he kept ell his feelings, fears and thoughts to himself (See
Unlike the Mitzvah of Milah, when Avraham consulted with his neighbours Oneyr, Eshkol and Mamre, this time he sought no one’s advice.  He feared that they will talk him out of it.
What would his neighbours and friends would say about this latest test; Avrohom Avinu was the one who always spread the word of HaShem (‎11 in the References Appendix) and he was the one who bemoaned the fact that people were worshipping the idol Molech by offering their children up to it.  Now he himself is slaughtering his offspring?!
Early riser: וישכם אברהם בבוקר – Avrohom Avinu rose at the crack of dawn, when the rays of the sun were barely visible (See Paragraph. ‎10 in the References Appendix) and did all the preparations by himself: he saddled his ass and clove the wood – physical work that he could have easily delegated to his servants.
Balaam’s copycat actions:
This may seem trivial but it ended up saving the Jewish nation about 400 years later.  Balaam was the prophet of the non-Abrahamite world and the way he conducted himself was not befitting his status as a leader of the world.
When he was invited to curse the Jewish people, HaShem delayed him by refusing to let him go at first.  When HaShem finally allowed him to go, he started very in the morning and saddled his ass by himself.  These actions were done as if to counteract the deeds of our forefather, who didn’t shirk from doing everything early and without the help from others, in order to fulfil HaShem’s will.
During his journey, the angel positioned himself in the middle of the road to prevent him from reaching Moab.
His retort to HaShem was: You did the same to Avraham; first you told him to offer up his son, then you told him through an angel to take him off the altar.

At that moment, his ass started talking and Balaam lost his tongue…  This was the special power of speech that was created at the same time of the ram of Yitzchak.

Akeydas Yitzchak - עקדת יצחק - Part I

This time of the year before Rosh HaShonoh is the time to explore the Parshah of the Akeyda
Akeydas Yitzchok is a term describing the story how Avrohom Avinu brought his son Yitzchok up on the altar – Mizbe-ach on Mount Moriah.  This was the tenth test, after all the tests that he went through and withstood all of them.
The story of the Akeyda first appears in Chumash Bereishis Chapter 22 and since then has been highlighted throughout or long history.  For example, it appears in Google search 577,000 times (for comparison, the Mabul appears 599,000 time).  Then there are many paintings by some of the most famous painters in history like Rembrandt.
Unlike the version taught in Muslim schools across the Middle East, which swap the roles of the two brothers as if Avrohom offered Yishmael up and Yitzchok stayed behind with Eliezer.  As one Gadol is purportedly retorted to this ludicrous fairy-tale: what a shame that this is not the real story, for had this been true, HaShem could have prevented so much innocent blood from being shed, had Avrohom carried out his intentions without being stopped!!!
1)            The Parsha of Akeydas Yitzchak is said on a daily basis in many Shuls across the world.  It is also the portion of the Leining on the second day of Rosh HaShanah, as is alluded to in the verse אשר ייאמר היום – Hayom is a reference to Rosh HaShanah, when we say היום הרת עולם and זה היום תחלת מעשיך – the Yom with the "ה" הידיעה as the well-known Yom (Maor veShomesh, Rosh HaShanah).
The story of the Akeyda is also alluded to in the Machzor of nearly (or all) Yomim Toivim:
Rosh HaShanah Mussaf in Shofros and many other references, Succos in Tefillas Geshem and many other places, Shavuos in the Yotzros / Krovos of both days (Yom Kippur?
2)            The head of a lamb
The Derech HaChayim (Rabbi Yaakov of Lissa, Par. 142) writes that one of the reasons for eating from the head of a ram or sheep on Rosh HaShanah night is to remember the merits of the Akeydas Yitzchak.
Tashlich is also one of the things that we do in memory to Akeydas Yitzchok, as is brought down in Yalkut Yosef on Hilchos Rosh Hashonoh (based on Midrash Tanchuma):
The Parshah in a Nutshell

This weeks Parshah is dedicated in memory of the Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg OB"M HY"D

Exodus 27:20-30:10

G-d tells Moses to receive from the Children of Israel pure olive oil to feed the "everlasting flame" of the menorah, which Aaron is to kindle each day, "from evening till morning."

The priestly garments, to be worn by the  Kohanim (priests) while serving in the Sanctuary are described. All Kohanim wore: 1) the ketonet -- a full length linen tunic; 2) michnasayim -- linen breeches; 3) mitznefet or migba'at -- a linen turban;  4) avnet -- a long sash wound above the waist.

In addition, the Kohen Gadol ("high priest") wore: 5) the efod, an apron-like garment made of blue, purple and red-dyed wool, linen and gold thread; 6) the choshen, a breastplate containing  twelve precious stones inscribed with the names of the twelve tribes of Israel; 7) me'il -- a cloak of blue wool, with gold bells and decorative pomegranates on its hem; 8) the tzitz -- a golden plate worn on the forehead bearing the inscription "Holy to G-d".

Tetzaveh also includes G-d's detailed instructions for the seven-day initiation of Aaron and his four sons -- Nadav, Avihu, Elazar and Itamar -- into the priesthood, and for the making of the Golden Altar on which the ketoret ("incense") was burned.

This being the Shabbat before Purim, on which we celebrate the foiling of Haman the Amalekite's plot to destroy the Jewish people, the weekly Parshah is supplemented with the Zachor reading (Deuteronomy 25:17-19) in which we are commanded to remember the evil of Amalek and to eradicate it from the face of the earth.

Yom Echad = Day One

Yom Rishon. It was a chidush for me when I lerned that in Bereishis 1:3-5 HaShem “only” (it certainly isn’t only, but anyway) declares “Day One” when He created light and separated the light from darkness. Day One.

Yom Echad. The consecutive days are yom shenee, yom shlishi etc but the day when light was created was “only” Yom Echad.

I never really observed the importance of this. But during this weeks lernen I understood that this was the beginning but not the fulfillment.

When we finished the building of the mishkan on 25th of Kislev and Moshe Rabbeinu tells us to “hold our horses” and wait three months, it all became clear to me. We were asked to wait for the first day of the first month. It was the day the princes first began with their offerings. It was the first day the shechina came to came to dwell among us. It was the first day that a sacrifice in any but the appointed place was forbidden. It was the first day the kohanim bestowed their blessings upon us. It was the first day for regular korbanot. It was the first day the kohanim took part of certain parts of the offerings. It was the first day the heavenly fire was seen on the altar. It was the first day…Period.

It was Yom Rishon.

The creation was “only” the beginning. Day One.

But the day when we built a dirah beTachtonim and perfected the intention of HaShem was truly “Yom Rishon”.

Wonderful.

The unity with HaShem. And as the Alter Rebbe reminds us about this unity in Ch. 33 of Tanya this week that Chazal instituted us to say: "אַשְׁרֵינוּ מַה טּוֹב חֶלְקֵנוּ וְכוּ' וּמַה יָפָה יְרוּשָּׁתֵנוּ".

Clothing for refujews

Hi, there are over 400 Ukrainian Jewish refugees (=refujews) in Vienna. We are desperately trying to send them children's clothing - donated by a local shop in Stamford Hill - via Antwerp, Belgium, but we cannot find a driver going there that is willing to take it.

I was already in touch with all parcel services...

It would be a huge chesed if you know of anyone driving there today, or a volunteer to travel by EuroStar - to give them a call and ask them if they can take along the clothes.

Perhaps you could even put this TxT on a WhatsApp group for maximum exposure.

It's approximately 6 suitcases. But even one or 2 is a huge help.  May we never know the pain of being a refugee. 07769436400

The passing of a Torah giant

Dear friends,

Together with the rest of the Jewish world, we all mourn the passing of the leading Torah sage of our generation - HaGaon Rav Chaim Kanievsky of blessed memory, who left this world on Friday.

With hundreds of thousands at his funeral today, it was one of the largest ever to be held in Israel. Take a moment to reflect how remarkable that is. Rav Chaim Kanievsky held no official position, no title other than ‘rabbi’. He wielded no political power or executive authority. He commanded no budgets, no teams of employees, no press or media operation. And yet, he was one the most influential leaders in the Jewish world.

His authority derived not from any financial or political power but simply from the depth and breadth of his Torah wisdom, from the nobility of his character, and the sincerity of his deeds. The influence he wielded, the honour he was accorded, the veneration he inspired, resided purely in his spirit.

The prophet tells us that he found Hashem not in the drama of the ‘howling wind, nor in the raging fire, nor in the tumultuous earthquake’  but “in a delicate still voice” (1 Kings 19:12). Rav Chaim’s influence came through the “delicate still voice” of his teachings and writings, in his peerlessTorah scholarship. He wrote great works of Halacha. But with all his remarkable intellectual accomplishments, his “delicate still voice” was also heard in his righteousness, through his living embodiment of the Divine values of our Torah.

I experienced this personally. I met with Rav Kanievsky on three occasions. When I started my position as a young chief rabbi, he gave me a special blessing that stayed with me and gave me great encouragement. I met with him again just as the international Shabbat Project was getting off the ground, and his endorsement meant so much to me personally and also helped draw support for the project. Later, in 2019, he helped me launch a campaign for Shabbat observant communities to deepen their Shabbat experience through Torah learning.

On the occasions I was privileged to meet with Rav Chaim Kanievsky, I was struck  by the modesty of his small apartment in Bnei Brak. No elaborate office with grand views. No plush furniture. Everything was so simple. Books were everywhere - one of which was always open in front of him. The atmosphere was permeated with humility and wisdom.

I saw how Rav Chaim Kanievsky was always  totally accessible to anyone who wanted to speak to him - to seek his advice, or his blessing or simply an answer to a Torah question. Whenever I went to meet with him, there were lines of people outside his door. The people who stood in those queues day after day were from all walks of life. Young and old, rich and poor, learned and not.

His wisdom, compassion and learning moved people, and that is why they made him their Gadol HaDor the “Great of the Generation”. It is a title that no committee can award you. There is no election that you stand for. It cannot be bought or attained by any official process. And it comes with no benefits or perks or power in the traditional sense. It is a title awarded by the people - from the most learned to the least - to a sage who has captured their hearts and minds with his righteousness and learning. Rav Chaim did so for decades.

The best way for us to pay respects is by learning more Torah in his merit, especially during the shloshim, which he would certainly have regarded as the greatest gift anyone could give him.

May his memory be a blessing,
