Kenton does ShabbatUK 2022/5782

This past Shabbat, we joined the Travelling Chassidim for ShabbatUK at the Kenton United Synagogue. The experience was unlike any other ShabbatUK, as we ended up leading the holy Shabbat for around one hundred very eager participants from the local community and beyond. To be truthful, we came away with a better deal than we bargained for: the members of Kenton Synagogue went out of their way to give us an uplifting and inspirational Shabbat one to remember. This was one beautiful communal Shabbat, replete with enlightening speeches by superb speakers, the local Rabbi, the indefatigable Rabbi Yehuda Black and the guest speaker Rabbi Saul Zneimer, who was the local Rabbi some decades ago. The traditional Shul services were specially uplifting, complemented by the warm Davening of the Travelling Chassidim, with the Chazan enthralling the whole assembly with well-known songs. We were warmly welcomed by Rabbi and the Rebbetzin Black, who opened their home to all the guests – and then some. The lavish Friday night meal was deliciously catered by the Rebbetzin, who kept offering more salads, more delights. The delightful Kiddush and Shabbos lunch and Shalosh Seudos, graciously served by the ladies of the congregation was enjoyed by all. The atmosphere was such that however late the Zman was, we didn’t want Shabbos to end. When Shabbos finally came to a close, the beautiful shul resounded with the special Havdala ceremony. It was definitely a poignant moment when we said our farewells to our special newly found friends, fellow Jews who went all the way to make our acquaintance. What comes to mind when writing these lines is Mi ke’amcha Yisroel – who is like your people Israel! From a very grateful participant, who have been inspired by such a warm, soulful and extremely memorable experience.

ShabbatUK at Woodford Forest United Synagogue

The Travelling Chassidim of London were privileged to spend Shabbos with the warm and welcoming community of Woodford Forest, East London, who has at its helm the tireless Rabbi and Rebbetzin Wollenberg and their family. We arrived shortly before Shabbos and were warmly welcomed by the Rabbi. The assistant Esther showed us to our comfortably prepared rooms, which were to be our lodging quarters for the duration of ShabbatUK. Friday night we met the members who came to daven and were eager to welcome us and make us feel at home in every way possible. We enjoyed a spirited Kabbalat Shabbat, replete with singing and Maariv davening was filled with warm songs and followed by dancing in unison – the Travelling Chassidim and members of the local community coming together in a rare show of unity! We were then escorted to the Rabbi's house where a lavish meal was served - all cooked and prepared by the Rebbetzin, the assistant Esther and the Wollenberg children. Stories and Divrei Torah were shared and in spite of our different backgrounds we bonded over insightful conversation and delectable food and wine. Shabbat morning we listened to the Rabbi's shiur on Tanya, whose insightful yet practical words of inspiration and Jewish thought were relevant and meaningful to all. It was then that we met Shul members who had not been in shul the night before; what a welcome we received! Shacharit followed with the Chassidic touch, Rabbi Aron Weingarten leading the prayers with songs that created a cohesive and inspiring atmosphere. The reading of the Torah was interspersed with Mazel Tov wishes and singing for the 85th Birthday and for the birth of a great-granddaughter – both Simchos of locals. A festive atmosphere permeated the whole assembly and was upped to the next level by the Rabbi’s warm words of inspiration. Rabbi Wollenberg's uplifting words about the power of the Shabbos - specifically the impact of a nationwide ShabbatUK - as a time to inspire others to find meaning in Shabbat and their everyday lives, empowered the audience to raise the bar for Yiddishkeit. After Mussaf we were led to the eating area where a lavish sitting down kiddush lunch was lovingly prepared by the Rebbetzin and the ever-present Esther. It was then that the atmosphere peaked with the Travelling Chassidim singing traditional oldies as well as Chassidic songs. We also spent the time meeting and getting acquainted with each other, discussing our lives, communities and histories. Friendships were forged as young and old bonded finding the things that bring us together rather than the differences that set us apart. One shul participant remarked "it's never been this atmospheric before", another said "you made our Shabbos atmosphere" - everyone was in good spirits and palpable energy was felt throughout the whole Shabbos. The Travelling Chassidim were again escorted to the Rabbi's house where we were given the traditional 'chulent', kugels and dessert. Family Wallenberg's hospitality is really legendary! Mincha followed after a Shabbat nap together with a cozy Shalosh Seudos - again prepared in style, sparing no effort. Traditional Zemirot was sung as well as other Jewish niggunim; the atmosphere was one of friendship and cohesion! Shabbos ended too quickly but with fond memories of this wonderful opportunity to meet such a hospitable and loving community and to bring different sectors of the Jewish community together is really unforgettable! Huge Shoutout to Rabbi and Rebbetzin Wallenberg, Esther Odze and the wonderful Wollenberg clan for going all out to make this happen!

ShabbatUK meets TCUKE in Manchester

In what has become a much anticipated event, ShabbatUK was once again a huge success in shuls across the UK. This year the stakes were higher than usual as ShabbatUK was an opportunity for Rabbis to encourage their congregants to take the plunge and properly come back to shul, since attendance had dropped to all-time lows due to COVID-19. Rabbis and their devoted Rebbetzins worked tirelessly to create programmes, which would attract people - both new and regular attendees - to make this a very special Shabbos. Two shuls in Manchester teamed up with the popular kiruv group – the Travelling Chassidim – to offer their congregants a very special Shabbos to remember. At the Shrubberies, which is run by Rabbi Dovid and Rebbetzen Eisenberg, the ShabbatUK activities began with an arts and crafts session on the previous Sunday. The children made beautiful posters which were not only hung up around the shul building but also printed in the special souvenir bencher, which was distributed in honour of the occasion. A hands-on Challah Bake, held in the Hilton Suite, was likewise very successful, with a large number of people of all ages - including members of the Friendship Circle and Heathland Village - joining together to learn about the significance of taking challah, with practical demonstrations of beautiful challah making. ShabbatUK at the Shrubberies was a joint project with the Friendship Circle, which is no surprise to those who know this lovely community. They have developed a name as an extremely inclusive community and there are a number of special needs adults from the community who have chosen to make the Shrubberies their shul, for its welcoming, helpful atmosphere. The Travelling Chassidim joined Shrubberies for Friday night davening, where they created a beautiful atmosphere with their lebedig singing and dancing. At the chicken soup and whisky Kiddush which followed Ma’ariv, the Travelling Chassidim and their families stayed and mingled with the shul members, with more singing and friendly ‘schmoozing’. Shabbos morning found the Travelling Chassidim once more joining the shul where one of their members davened Shacharis for the omud. Musaf was followed by a beautifully laid out ‘kiddunch’; a buffet style Shabbos lunch with cholent, kugel and more. The afternoon’s programme included a Q & A session with the Travelling Chassidim and the shul members asked some really good questions. The two groups really got to know each other and discovered that, as one person said, “...our similarities are so much more than our differences!”. The group made a fabulous impression on the shul members. One woman said: “Inviting the Travelling Chassidim was the best thing our shul ever did. It must have been hard for the chassidic men to come into our shul, but they were all so warm and friendly, and they didn’t just go home after davening; they stayed for the whole programme!”. In Meade Hill Shul, Rabbi Yanky and Rebbetzen Prijs started off their ShabbatUK activities with a Shabbos-themed paint night for the ladies, and an evening with Rabbi Yosef Grunfeld of Seed for the men. They also had a very successful Challah Bake, with participants aged 12 – 90! Some of the women had never baked challah before and this was a beautiful opportunity to become acclimated to this special mitzvah. Bags of dough were distributed, and after the women watched Mrs Sue First make her dough, they were each able to try out the plaiting techniques which were demonstrated. It was a very inspiring evening, and a perfect intro to the beautiful Shabbos ahead. Meade Hill Shul had some very special guests for the occasion: Chazzan Michoel Streicher from the USA (of Eyn Aroch Lecho fame) lifted the shul sky-high, with his beautiful singing and davening, and Rabbi Y. Y. Rubinstein was brought over as the guest speaker. Rabbi Rubinstein spoke four times over the course of Shabbos, leaving everyone inspired as they were entertained! The other guests, of course, were the Travelling Chassidim families who joined for the whole Shabbos. Friday Night saw them on the bimah, accompanying the Chazzan in his inspiring singing, and after Lecho Dodi, they led the men in spirited dancing around the shul. Here, too, a chicken soup and whisky Kiddush followed davening, where the Chassidim sat amongst the shul families and quickly made friends. Shabbos morning davening was followed by a beautifully laid out four-course Shabbos seuda, expertly arranged by Rebbetzen Prijs. Once again, the Travelling Chassidim and their families broke down many barriers as many pre-conceived notions were swiftly laid to rest. Both groups really enjoyed the experience; many new friendships were formed. Later in the afternoon, the shul hall filled up again for a gala Shalosh Seudos with a larger group of Travelling Chassidim joining. Once more the hall was filled with their lively singing and friendly demeanour. As with his previous droshos, Rabbi Rubinstein managed to delight the audience with his warm and witty words and exceptionally meaningful stories. Chazzan Streicher moved the people to tears with his composition – the Last Seder in the Warsaw Ghetto – where he poignantly sang about Moishele asking his father if they would be alive next year to ask the Mah Nishtanah. ShabbatUK ended on a high with a musical Havdalah by the guest Chazzan and the Travelling Chassidim and it was with feelings of having experienced something unique that old and new friends left the shul, looking forward to the next occasion where they would join together again. Mrs S., an active participant of Meade Hill said that for her, the best part was “...the way people from all walks of life came together to daven to the One Hashem, regardless of what they wore on their heads. As Rabbi Rubinstein said, we are all neshomas, not just black hats or kippot serugot”. Similar events took place in various shuls across London as Travelling Chassidim groups joined up with Kenton United Synagogue, Walford Road shul in Stoke Newington and also Woodford Forest Synagogue in East London, and much enthusiastic feedback was received from there as well. Immense hakoras hatov is due to the CCE – or Centre for Community Excellence - part of the Office of the Chief Rabbi, which graciously subsidised a significant part of the various ShabbatUK programmes.

Before building a new Shul -

For ShabbatUK 2022: Phone and Learn with The Travelling Chassidim!

Dear Friend, Re: ShabbatUK is here: Are you ready to find a new PaL? How is the planning for ShabbatUK 2022 going for you? Here is a ShabbatUK tip that you can put to good use, courtesy of PaL and the Travelling Chassidim. During our travels, we at The Travelling Chassidim found that it’s unfair to go home after ShabbatUK and leave our host community in the lurch… We therefore teamed up with PaL – Phone and Learn – who partners tutors with students to discover our beautiful Jewish heritage over the ‘phone. Here is the poster by PaL, created esdpecially in preparation for ShabbatUK 2022.
For more information about TCUKE, or to book a Shabbos for your community, visit us at www.travellingchassidim.org.uk. I hope that you will put this PaL leaflet to good use and wish you a good ShabbatUK! Looking forward to greeting you at the next Shabbat event - are you ready? Travelling Chassidim UK & Europe ShabbatUK is nearly HERE! The Traveling Chassidim in the UK & Europe

The Travelling Chassidim UK & Europe - a not-for-profit organisation - was formed by Chassidim from London, Westcliff and Manchester, who travel with their families around the country, visiting Jewish communities in the Provinces. Travelling Chassidim was founded in America by Rabbi Aryeh Royde of Monsey - formerly of Manchester, UK. The Travelling Chassidim is part of the World of Belz institutions in Jerusalem, guided by the Rebbe of Belz SHLIT”A. Inspired by the teachings of the late Rabbi Noach Weinberg ZTZ”L of Aish HaTorah, and especially by his innovative Project Inspire initiative – the group travels across North America, from San Antonio, Texas in the south to Côte-Saint-Luc in Canada up North. The Travelling Chassidim bring with them classic Chassidic warmth and - together with the special aura of the holy Shabbos - form a deep connection with the host community, resulting in a Shabbaton that is truly transformational, memorable and – sometimes even contagious... Here’s our trump card for any community that is planning to have them over for Shabbos: One very special feature of both the original American group and the British-European one is that we do not charge a penny for our services; the host community’s only expenditures are the travel and sometimes accommodation costs! As one of its founder’s says: “So many communities hesitate to invite us because they assume the costs would be too much for their budget. However, this should not be a problem, especially now that there is help from the UK & Commonwealth Chief Rabbi’s Centre for Community Excellence, whose intervention made many a memorable Shabbos a dream come true”. For more information about TCE, or to book a Shabbos for your community, visit us at www.travellingchassidim.org.uk (please remember: our website address is spelled with two sets of double letters: “TraveLLing and ChaSSidim dot org dot uk).

Remembering Reb Mosher Ztz"l

From: Aharon Factor Date: Sun, 2 May 2021 at 12:23 Subject: Reb. Moshe Margulies "Aharon, hold the speaker for another minute, I am nearly there"....These were often the words spoken to me by my good and dear friend, Reb Moshe Margulies, when I was the announcer for " Start your day, the Torah way ", based at Bialla Beis Hamedresh, Castlewood Road. Reb Moshe was always busy with community projects, but wanted to be there in person to hear, as he called it, my Welsh Tones! While I was involved with this great learning platform, Reb Moshe was always an encouragement to me and I enjoyed our interaction. Sadly, Stamford Hill has lost a very active and accomplished member of our community.. Fondly remembered by Aharon Factor.

Rebellion and reconciliation

Sin and its punishment, or repentance = rebellion and reconciliation. Out of the millions of different trees in Gan Eden, the Creator forbade man and his wife Eve to eat from only one tree; most importantly – a tree that gives man knowledge. Why? All animals are born with all the "knowledge" they need for their survival for the rest of their lives. As it is written, a "one-day-old bull" on the day he was born, is already considered a "bull". Man is the only creature born without a mind and helpless. And he needs many years of special care and upkeep, in order for him to be independent. Therefore the question arises as to why G-d has forbidden Adam and Eve to eat from this one tree, only this special tree – the tree of knowledge that could give him the mind he lacks. And [TY1] the answer is that man must be limited in at least one thing. A person who is not limited may think that there is no "landlord" and he is a "landlord." He is the "landlord" and he can do whatever he wants. All over the world it is customary for a king to punish a rebel in his kingdom with death. And so the Creator of the world said to the first man: On the day you eat the forbidden fruit you will die, immediately. Asking for forgiveness, repenting, a total giving over of oneself is the opposite of rebellion. How does a person express and achieve total submissiveness? When the person bows: lying down on the floor with the face facing the ground, he allows everyone to step on him and when a person is stepped on the back, his ribs are broken and he can not breathe and has no more chance of living. G-d gave man the opportunity to prove his submissiveness in a better way, by immersing in a mikva. What is the connection? And what does immersion in a mikva symbolize? Immersion in a mikva however is a greater level of submission, because before immersing in the mikva, a person must take off all of his clothing; clothing which instils in him a spirit of importance and pride! He must temporarily get part from his property, which instils within him a spirit of perverted confidence. And so man "without clothes", humbled, goes down to immerse in the water of the mikva. When he is covered with water for a short time, he runs out of air and stands at the gate between life and death and when man sees death before him, instinctively he calls out to his Creator and prays in his heart and asks for mercy, forgiveness and atonement. He promises he will not sin anymore and he continues to ask the Creator for help to overcome all the problems of life. After all, there is no person in the world without problems, even if he is healthy, strong, smart and rich. And why is there no person without problems? After all, the Creator of the world created a perfect world, the sun, the moon and the whole universe have been operating for thousands of years, tirelessly and without problems. Why precisely man who is the most perfect creature in creation, who also has the power of thought and speech, a gift no one else in the universe has, why is he precisely full of problems? One of the answers is because it is the Creator of the world who creates the problems for every person, at any time, according to his condition, so that he may repent and thereby become closer to his Creator! Since, usually, without problems people do not repent. Moshe Rabenu explains in Tehillim (90: 3): G-d brings man problems and asks - do you wish to live? Repent. Therefore when man immerses, he prays and begs in his words: "Please G-d save me, please". To open a new and more brilliant page in his life. In the First World War in 1914-18 there were defensive excavations along the entire border between Germany and France. When the war started and the cannons started bombing the excavations, all those who were in the excavations shouted: "G-d please save me" and in French: "O'Dieu s.v.p. sauvé moi" [TY2] There is an expression, "there are no atheists in foxholes"; in other words – "when the cannons are roaring, there are no atheists." Recently, in 2011 when two planes entered the two "twin" towers in New York and the buildings (of 101 floors) were on fire, all those who were there (especially on the upper floors) had a choice to either burn or jump out, likely to their death; 3500 people jumped out to their death, people from all different countries and nationalities. In the buildings there were black boxes everywhere which photographed and recorded what was happening. After cleaning all the debris of the burning of the towers, they found these black boxes and saw that everyone who jumped shouted in different languages the same words "Please G-d Save me, Please!" (See Article "A round-trip ticket - which every soul receives in order to descend from heaven to earth and back to heaven"). Every person, before his soul returns to heaven, cries out "Please G-d save me!" The first man sinned, but he did not die immediately. G-d said to him, "On the day you eat you will die." Why did he not die immediately? He lived another 930 years. What happened? The first thing he did on earth after sin - he went down to immerse in the spring mikveh of the Shiloah (Gichon water) which is currently located 500 meters from the Western Wall. And [TY3] he prayed, wept and begged the Creator of the world for 49 days and much of the water that surrounded him was his own tears. He asked G-d to give him, his wife and his descendants a second chance. Therefore G-d sweetened his punishment and instead of dying within 24 hours - which is a day of a human being, he continued to live for a "day" of the Creator of the world, which is equal to a thousand years of a human being, as it is written: "for 1000 years in your eyes today was yesterday" (Tehillim 90: 4) and indeed he was allotted to live a thousand years, of which he gave 70 years to King David. Since the King Messiah will descend from King David, of Messiah - who will correct the world, the correction of sin must come at the expense of the sinner. Were it not for the sin of the first man, man would have owed [TY4] as long as the world exists, as is written in the Gemara and the Midrashim, that this world was planned to exist for 6,000 years (Tractate R.H., page LV). Since the first man - every person who goes down to immerse in the mikvah immediately, instinctively meets the Creator and begs - give me a second chance, give me life, I promise not to sin anymore. He regrets the past and accepts to improve for the future. Therefore Mikva immersion is the easiest and most effective way to repent and continue life as required by the Creator of the world. The Hebrew language, unlike all other languages in the world, was not created by humans, but by the Creator of the world, who created this language thousands of years before the creation of the world and in this language the Holy Torah was created and served as a chart for the creation of the world. As it is written that the Creator of the world looked at the Torah and according to what is written in the Torah he created the world. And when the Creator created the first man, whose unique virtue is that he has the power of thought and the power of speech, in what language will he speak? All those who were created in the six days of creation, were created mature. Adam and Eve were created mature as adults of the age of 20 and spoke the holy language of Hebrew. Therefore, the word Mikva is also hope, because the Creator of the world wanted immersion in a mikva to create new hope for every person as well. It is also therefore important for every community to build a men's mikva, which does not have to be like a palace and the best place to build it is in the synagogue complex, so that it is possible a person to ascend directly from the prayer of his heart in the mikva to the heat of prayers in the synagogue. Because after immersion, each person thinks differently, prays and lives differently and all community life takes on a more serious character, of learning and keeping the commandments of the Torah and family purity is maintained as required and proper and all this brings a feeling of security, peace and happiness! It is quoted in the Midrashim that the Clouds of Honor in the desert blew men who did not immerse out of the camp (Pirkei D'Rabi Eliezer 44). And were defenceless from Amalek who was waiting to fight them. For 40 years in the desert they did not have to wash their clothes and did not have to buy new clothes. The babies and children who grew up over time, did not need bigger shoes and clothes because the clothes and shoes grew with them (as nails grow with the fingers); they lacked nothing. But when a person has everything he wants and needs, there is a danger that he will forget that there is a Creator. A child shouts to his parents when he needs them. When he has no needs, he does not shout. And outside the camp, Amalek was waiting for them, which made them want to return to the camp immediately and immerse every morning before their morning prayers. (Shemot 17: 8, Devorim 22: 17). Jewish people asked Ezra Hasofer: "Is there a Mikva for Israel"? Rashi translates: "Is there hope for Israel"? Accordingly: Mikva = hope (Ezra 10: 2). [TY5] Rabbi Rabi Akiva declares: Fortunate are you, O Israel, When the Temple existed, it would have saved the people of Israel from all troubles! And now that it has been destroyed and has not yet been rebuilt, do not despair; G-d is the Mikva = the hope of the people of Israel, as it is written in Jeremiah "The Mikva (Hope) of Israel is G-d" Immersion for men is not a sensitive issue and it is easy to persuade them to immerse in the Mikva, especially when the prophet Isaiah declares in the name of the Lord, "I do not listen to your prayers until you bathe (immersion in a mikva) to repent." No wonder so many Yidden immerse every morning before prayer and also before every prayer of special problems and requests. In some Hasidic synagogues, those who do not immerse in the morning before prayer cannot lead the prayers nor receive an Aliyah to Torah and special honors, so most Hasidic synagogues have a men's mikva in the basement. And when men use the mikva, all those who are required to immerse will certainly immerse. 13 Nisan 5722 (14.4.22) This email was sent by MikvaTikva · Israel · Bnei Braq 61000 · Israel Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2022 3: 47 PM From: mikva tikva Subject: Pesach Kasher VeSameach!

Honouring our elders this Shabbat

Dear friends,
A worthy initiative is taking place this Shabbat. Shabbat VeHadarta, founded by the late Israeli cabinet minister Uri Orbach, encourages communities worldwide to pay special honour to its elderly members. The initiative is held each year on the Shabbat of Parshat Kedoshim on which we read the Torah verse “Rise in the presence of the elderly, honour the aged” (Leviticus 19:32). Michal Orbach, the leader of the Shabbat VeHadarta project, reached out to the Shabbat Project with an offer to join her. It is an honour for the Shabbat Project to partner with VeHadarta – a fellow movement to promote Torah values through global Jewish unity and the power of Shabbat. There are various ways we can get involved. For example, giving flowers before Shabbat, connecting over the phone or in person with an elderly member of your community, taking the opportunity to visit elder family members, inviting elderly neighbours for a Shabat meal, encouraging community rabbis to give elder members special aliyot in shul. You can find more suggestions at vehadarta.uriorbach.co.il/english/. This initiative celebrates a very important mitzvah of showing respect to the elderly, who are our closest link to previous generations going back to Mount Sinai. They are also a source of wisdom for our communities, as the Talmud tells us, zaken, elder, stands for ze-kana-chochma, “one who has acquired wisdom” from decades of life experiences. In recognition of this, the great sage, Rabbi Yochanan would always make a point of standing for the elderly no matter who they were. Shabbat VeHadarta is about, as individuals, showing reverence and respect to the elderly – in our daily lives and interactions. And in doing so, setting an example for our children: teaching them by example the importance of giving honor to wisdom and traditional values. Let us all get involved in this wonderful mitzvah in any way we can! With blessings, Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein
