Jewish in Davos

Staying in Davos

There is Davos Dorf and Davos Platz, which have over the years become unified into one town.  Basically, Davos Platz is an extension of Davos Dorf (or vice versa...) and so there are two thoroughfares running in parallel across the whole length of the area: Tahlstrasse where traffic (buses, cars etc.) can only go eastwards(?) and Promenade, where traffic can only go westwards(?), with a lesser one at the top, running between the houses on the ridge of the mountain.

Re: Accommodation:

1) There is a Jewish charity based in Zurich that runs ZENTRUM HAUS DAVOS (originally Haus Etania ‑ Sanatorium),

Address: Richtstattweg 3, 7270 Davos, Schweiz, which is less than a ten minutes' walk from the Promenade (the upper main thoroughfare).

Re: Davening with a Minyan in Davos

Davening in the Davos Yeshiva:

The local Yeshiva has a Minyan at 7:30AM for Shacharis (please ask for Mincha-Ma'ariv times and eMail them to me, so we can help others, TYVM!) all year round, except for Bein HaZemanim (During covid it was allocated free of charge to the Yeshiva by the kind generosity of Family Halpert of Zurich).

Davening in other places in and around Davos:

You can try to ask Rafi Mosbacher on davos.mosbacher@gmail.com, who organises all the Jewish infrastructure in Davos, about the Etania Beis haMedrash: Minyan during weekdays and Shabos and the Etania Mikvah (try: 0041774264140).

Re: Shabbos
Remember to look out for the furthest distance you could walk so as not to cross the border of Techum Shabbos.
Remember to place a glass, stone or metal underneath your Shabbos candles.
Remember all the other things you need to look out for, when renting Zimmerim in the Galil . ..

Re: Walking
Even if  it takes 30 minutes to walk to the shul, and 40 minutes to walk to the grocery store, it's still worth it.  After all, the streets and paths in Davos are walkable and - once you (and your family) orientate yourself - it is not easy to get lost. There many hills, but hey - you came to rejuvenate!
Don't be afraid to ask the locals for directions, as they take pride in their town and are very forthcoming with help and advice - remember to greet them: "Gruetzy" and thank them: "Danke Viel Mahl".
I think that there is 'siesta time', which means that a couple of hours in the afternoon everything closes down (akin to Bene Beraq).
Hope to be מקיים the לאו of ולפני עור לא תתן מכשול, so if some of the advice I gave you is incorrect, please do let me know.

So, it's easy to lose yourself, IF you have no street plan; print one online to PDF AND to paper and on the plane take time to highlight the landmarks.  However, depending on your age, physical state etc., walking and climbing shouldn't be a problem at all; hey you're going there to replenish your oxygen, refresh your blood and rejuvenate!

Re: Transportation

As there are buses literally every couple of minutes, you will be able to reach any point in town without difficulty.

The bus and train are very efficient, so you don't really need a car (unless you are not prepared to keep to the punctual times of arriving ten minutes before the train departs and leaving the train well before the conductor blows his whistle - and his top...).  See: https://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/swiss-peak-pass-for-free-mountain-top-excursions
Besides, you will need to have a permit for car parking, unless the flat comes with a dedicated space.
Besides, if you really want to take out the maximum from your costly summer holiday in the Swiss Alps, WALK ;-)

For other accommodation options, see our blog "Staying in Davos".

Before you go, I would like to know:
1) Are you coming by rented car?
2) Where are you coming from?
3) How did you hear about me?

Have a safe trip
