06 November 2016 20:56

What Academia Misses about Haredim

The Marker 17.8.16
Higher Education – by Chaim Sukenik
What Academia Misses about Haredim
They say that you can't argue with success, especially not with such tremendous success as an 83% increase in Haredi students over the last five years.
And yet, despite this unique success, that can only be credited to select government programs, some insist on concentrating on numbers instead of acknowledging the achievements reached.
These days, the Council for Higher Education is conducting discussions regarding the renewal of the five-year-plan for integration of Haredim into academia.
Despite the significant success of the previous five-year-plan, some oppose its renewal.
The majority of the discussion revolves around the continued existence of gender-separate campuses, which today house the majority of Haredi students.
The arguments of the opposed reveal that they lack familiarity with the characteristics and mentality of the Haredi community as well as the existing reality, since the action they seek – will undoubtedly incur the return to isolation of the Haredi sector and impede the continued integration of this community into Israeli society.
The claim of the Hebrew University representative in the discussions, stating that the existence of dozens of Haredi students in their regular campus is proof that if the Haredi community is not provided with the option of the "Refuge of Separate Campuses," they will have no choice but to integrate into regular campuses – is absurd, since this handful of Haredim does not represent the mindset held by the majority of the Haredi community.
The Haredi sector is undergoing a long process and still upholds that the centrality of Torah learning is valued above all others.
However, simultaneously a change is occurring in the understanding and acceptance that integrating into academia and the workforce is a necessity.
And yet, most of the Haredi students view separation as condition without which they would not attended an institution of higher education.
Taking steps such as closing the separate campuses will bring an end and even cause regression in the process of integration and to the exclusion of the majority of Haredim from academic institutions.
As for their claim regarding the low academic level and censored materials provided in the Haredi campuses, it seems on this point as well that the opposition is unfamiliar with the happenings on the ground, or that they are actively choosing to ignore it.
The Jerusalem College of Technology – Lev Academic Center, the institute that I have the privilege to head, has over 40 years of experience with separate campuses for men and women.
40 years that have produced 8,000 orthodox and ultra-orthodox graduates, many of which hold key positions in the Israeli market and industry.
Working on our campuses are leading professors and scientists, at the forefront of research in Israel and around the world.
Our placement statistics are currently at 93%, and we were only recently ranked first and second in two of the CPA accreditation exams with 100% success rates for our Haredi women's campus.
These final words are not intended for self-promotion or braggery, they are simply here to present the reality that proves two things: the first, that separate campuses for men and women should not be viewed as segregation, but as a necessity based on the beliefs and world view of many, among which are the national-religious (dati-leumi) and Haredim communities; the second, the integration of Haredim, who comprise a third of our student population, does not necessarily lead to a decline in the quality and academic achievements of an institution.
If some Haredi campuses do not meet the level and academic demands required and expected from an institution of higher education, such cases should be addressed individually.
Pouring the baby out with the bathwater and concluding from such cases that all separate campuses should be closed – is foolishness.
The successful integration of sectors and communities in academia and society, such as Haredim and Ethiopian-Israelis, requires the establishment of programs specialized for the needs of these communities.
Without assumptions, compromising the academic level, or cutting corners – but by understanding their needs and difficulties, and creating conditions and a supportive environment, which will ensure their success.
The universities' insistence to remain in an academic ivory tower and settle for a mere handful from those sectors that they accept into their fold, will memorialize their segregation and exclusion from academia.
Adopting this approach will cause endless problems for the entire Israeli society.
The author is the president of the Jerusalem College of Technology – Lev Academic Center, in which over 2,000 Haredi students are studying towards degrees in engineering, computers, management and health-sciences.

Palestinian terrorism, Muslim hypocrisy

Final Big Logo

Palestinian terrorism, Muslim hypocrisy:
An Open letter from a Muslim woman

JULY 1, 2016, Nadiya Al-Noor
While millions of children got out of bed on the morning of June 30, 2016, excited for summer vacation, one child did not. A young Israeli girl, 13-year-old Hallel Yaffe Ariel, was brutally murdered in her own bed by a 17-year-old Palestinian terrorist. He broke into her house and stabbed her to death. Another life lost to senseless violence. Another poor soul taken too early from this world. But few Muslims in this world will be mourning her death, because Hallel was an Israeli Jew.
I am a Muslim, and I know that when it comes to Palestinian terrorism, too many Muslims are hypocrites. I have seen firsthand the casual, destructive anti-Semitism that plagues the Muslim community. I have heard it from the mouths of our religious leaders, from our politicians, and even from our otherwise peaceful, liberal Muslim activists. I have witnessed in horror the desperate attempts to justify Palestinian terrorism from people who I once respected. Why? Why do we decry all other types of terrorism, but bend over backwards to legitimize violence against Israeli Jews?
We blame it on “Zionism.” We blame it on “occupation.” We blame it on “apartheid.” We lap up the tired, anti-Semitic lies fed to us by Al-Jazeera: “Israelis cut off the water supply!” “Israelis are going to destroy the Al-Aqsa mosque!” We’re not even willing to admit that Israel is a country. We call it “Palestine.” We refuse to call violence against Israelis “terrorism,” and we hypocritically scream, “Resistance is not a crime!”
Let me tell you something. Stabbing pregnant women in the stomach is not “resistance.” Shooting people at a cafe is not “resistance.” Driving your car into pedestrians is not “resistance.” Bombing a bus is not “resistance.” Breaking into a woman’s home and murdering her in front of her children is not “resistance.” And stabbing a little girl to death in the one place where she was supposed to be safe is certainly not “resistance.” Terrorism is not resistance. Terrorism is an unjustifiable crime.
Muslims around the world are constantly decrying ISIS and most terrorism in the name of Islam. I know Muslims who are interfaith activists, peace advocates, doctors, gay rights activists, and more. We sincerely hate ISIS and terrorism with a passion. We’ll stand up against the persecution of Christians, atheists, Hindus, Shias, Ahmadis, and anyone else who is persecuted. We will sob to the heavens if a Palestinian is killed, but when it comes to Palestinian terrorism against Jews, we either turn a blind eye to it, or we twist the story to make the terrorists into the victims. This is unacceptable.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said, “If you say… ‘Violence in London isn’t justified, but suicide bombs in Israel are a different matter’ – then you too are part of the problem.” He is absolutely right. Terror is terror, even when it’s against Israelis. Do not try to justify or make excuses for the terrorism that happens much too often in Israel. Innocent people are being killed. Their lives are just as important as those killed in Paris, Brussels, Nigeria, Turkey, Pakistan, Jordan, Indonesia, Yemen, Lebanon, Iraq, or Syria. Their deaths are no more deserved.
Of course we must condemn instances where injustices are committed by the Israeli government or any other government or authority of any sort. Of course we must affirm the right to life of Palestinians, but one life is not worth more than another. An Israeli life lost is equal to that of a Palestinian. Tragedy is not a competition. We must mourn for both, and fight to prevent the loss of both. We must decry all terrorism committed. We must not bend over backwards to try to justify it. We must not blame innocent people for being slaughtered, or justify the actions of the terrorists who slaughter them. If we justify acts of terrorism, it is an indication that we do no really believe in peace.
When you make excuses for terrorists, you support terrorism. Period. Until we stand against terrorism in all its forms, against terrorists from every background, we Muslims are hypocrites. Allah does not love hypocrites.
The world lost a beautiful little girl on Thursday. We must not let Hallel’s death be ignored. We must fight anti-Semitism in all its forms, and that includes fighting against Palestinian terrorism. This was a terrible tragedy, and we must work to prevent it from happening to someone else’s child. In the words of my friend Afshine Emrani, an Iranian-American, “Dear God. Help us. We are not supposed to say Kaddish for a bat mitzvah girl.”

HaGefen UK is the Shiduchim office that was opened before Rosh HaShonoh 5776 and so far has managed to solve over a dozen Shiduch crises B"H.
HaGefen UK operatives are answering the call of Gedolei Yisroel, who have emphasised on many occasions the importance of helping to bring about a Shiduch in the Jewish community.
HaGefen UK operatives have so far answered hundreds of calls, from local as well as overseas callers who are eager to see their child under the Chuppah and continue on to build a Bayis Ne-eman beYisroel.
A brand new online database is being prepared, which allows hundreds of Shadchonim in the Kehillah and around the world collaborate on Shiduch prospects.  This innovative approach is spearheaded by the combined IT departments of Hagefen in Yerusholayim and the HaGefen UK office in London.

Shidduch Buch

“Shidduch Buch”

First Published online: 28/08/2015

“I believe it’s not a shidduch crisis, but a shadchanim crisis”

Interview with Reb Menasche Scharf, a HaGefen representative in London, by Naftali Zvi Dembitzer.

This interview first appeared in the Inyan Magazine, which is an integral part of the weekly HaModia (English UK Edition) newspaper.

The article was published to coincide with TU BeAv 5775 - 30/07/2015, a day that is historically associated with Shiduchim, as brought down in the Babylonian Talmud.

Hamodia: I’ve known you for quite some time as an askan, usually behind the scenes. Can you tell us a bit more about what you do?

Menasche Scharf: I grew up in the Belz Chassidus, where there’s a big emphasis on helping other Yidden, which may take on any shape or form. Whether it’s opening a new shul or gemach, arranging the internet asifa, or rallying more votes for the local community elections, I try to help.
Fifteen years ago, I made my first shidduch between two local families. I knew the boy very well and I knew the girl very well, and the shidduch came about. I have since then been in touch with many Shadchonim and tried to analyse what makes a good Shadchan.
From my observations I found that there are three types of shadchanim:
  1. There are those who have not invested any effort in researching both parties to see whether they match at all, they suggest a shidduch only because they happen to know the two families . Sometimes they are lucky enough that it works out and at worst they cause misfortune to at least six people, i.e. both sets of parents, the young couple and their kid(s)...
  2. Then there is the naturally-born shadchan, who knows everything about everyone; so he knows more about the boy and the girl and whether it’s a potential match. But the downside is that this type of Shadchan usually a) decides for you and b) doesn’t always keep things confidential; the whole town knows you’re going to make a shidduch even before you’ve decided!
  3. The previous two are at opposing poles. In the middle are the normal shadchanim: they know a few people. They try to help. They’re not always successful, but they try; they put their heart into it: this is one of the main ingredients of a good shadchan. They can be non-professionals, who happen to know a boy and a girl and happen to know that the two families are compatible, and voila: a plate is broken… The downside with this type of Shiduch is that because they are novices, ‘es past nisht’ for some baalebatim, who sidestep and hire a professional to ‘finalise’ things just to make it ‘looks balebatish’, and pay just a percentage to the actual shadchanis sure not to want to invest any efforts in arranging a shidduch ever again This contributes to having less shadchanim, and this reinforces the already existing crisis…
Hamodia: I note that you are an affiliate of the well-known shidduch organization Hegefen, based in Eretz Yisroel. Can you describe the shidduch crisis, and your objectives and activities in resolving this crisis?

Menasche Scharf: I believe there is no shidduch crisis, but a shadchanim crisis: there are plenty of boys and girls around, but there aren’t enough matchmakers to pair them up as quickly as we would have liked.
The shidduch age is going down; I’m not saying it’s good or bad, but it definitely creates pressure. The age varies in some communities; for example, in certain Chassidic circles the Shidduch age used was 20, then it became 19, and then 18, and now shidduchim are made where the chassan is not yet eighteen! On the other hand there are certain Kehillos where the shidduch lists are getting more and more entries whilst the existing entries don’t seem to move anywhere soon, and this is why we need more shadchanim to tackle them.

Hamodia: You say we need more shadchanim. So how does one become a shadchan?

Menasche Scharf: There’s no university that teaches how to be a shadchan. shadchanim are self-made. Many newly-marrieds try their hand at shidduchim: he has friends and she has friends, and they try to match them up. Yet, after six months, ninety percent will have stopped trying , for the simple reason that no one coached them through the initial stages of this highly rewarding career.
In order to minimise the crisis, we will have to work through the follow steps:
  1. TRAINING: step one in resolving the shadchanim crisis is to provide a framework for training new shadchanimand placements with a veteran shadchan upon completion of the course as an apprentice secretary.
  2. CUSTOMER SERVICE: This way, we would actually achieve step two: besides creating more shadchanim, shadchanim will finally have secretaries! Some shadchanim are so busy that in the best case you have to call them ten times, and after the tenth time they ‘might’ pick up the phone and in the worst case you reach their voicemail but cannot leave a message as it’s full.
  3. LOCAL DATABASE: Step three involves setting up a confidential list of local prospects. A lot can be achieved with a bit of automation: people who have not been contacted for a few weeks can appear in a ‘Reminders’ pane on the screen, for the secretary to give them a call and offer them some more suggestion from the new names that keep being added on to the database. When someone would call up the shadchan and ask if there is any suggestion for their son or daughter, the secretary will be able to look them up on the database and see immediately what the last suggestion was like, why it didn’t work out, and when was the last time someone called the parents with a new suggestion.  Also, by working together with an experienced shadchan, the novice shadchan will be able to gain a lot of knowledge as to the compatibility of prospective matches. The fact that one finds a boy and a girl doesn’t mean it’s a match! Experienced shadchanim know what questions to ask, they usually know many, many people, as they’ve been around longer and can reach a more balanced view on the viability of one prospective Shiduch over another.
  4. Step four in resolving the crisis, is for shadchanim to join efforts in the form of sharing information.  I don’t mean to says that shadchanim have to give away their business secrets, but they should exchange names with other shadchanim. A shadchan should approach other shadchanim and say, “I tried this. It didn’t work. however I’m convinced that this Shiduch could work. Please give it a try as it might work through your input.” That’s why it’s so important for shadchanim to hold regular meetings, so that they can brainstorm together. You’ll be surprised, it works wonders! There is a group of shadchantes here in London, and the ladies meet once a month. As for men shadchanim, currently there are only three shadchanim who work together here, and this is not enough. Which brings me to my next idea:
  5. GLOBAL DATABASE: Step five is to create a centralied global shidduch database, we would call it Shidduch Buch (e.g. shadchan’s notebook). The few shadchanim around simply can’t manage so much volume on their own. If you organize data in a coherent fashion, you can very easily make a search for a match with a similar background, similar wants etc. - across a multitude of countries. Many shadchanim have lists that are too long for them to handle, so they concentrate their efforts on the ‘easy’ ones, the local ones, or the ones that look most promising… The result is that people are left behind and relegated to the bottom of the list, even though they might come from nice, normal families.  In some kehillos in Eretz Yisroel, the idea of databases is already in use. However, it may limited to applicants over the age of 24 who reside there. By making an organization for older singles, you’re labeling them that they are ‘old’. Then there are some organizations who have their own global databases, but if you want to be placed on their lists, you have to wait twelve months because there’s such a long waiting list. But this is totally unnecessary; all I would say is, “We have an organization for shidduchim. Everyone is welcome.”  What we need is for shadchanim to place their lists on a centralized database, and for the lists to be dealt with by their secretaries and by regular meetings with other veteran shadchanim; and the information on the database should be available for all the shadchanim all the time, not just by the meetings. I am sure that many more shidduchim will happen this way iy”h.
  6. Step six is, once there are secretaries and there is a database, any lay person will be able to call in to the shidduch office and tell them of a girl or boy in their family or circle who needs a shidduch. In this way, even people who can’t be a shadchan themselves can help the people they know.  Every person in Klal Yisrael can be a shadchan. It doesn’t mean that they have to start a shidduch and finish the shidduch. But they have to think about it and do ‘something’, like picking up the phone and letting the shidduch office know.
Hamodia: With your proposal though, who would get paid the shadchanus fees? Who would get the credit?
Menasche Scharf: The database will have a Log-in system, so that every phone call one makes is logged and clocked. In this way, the more time one invests in a shidduch, the more time he clocks up on the system, and the shadchanus fees will be divided proportionately to the time each individual put into it.
So if the deputy shadchan says, “I would like to suggest a shidduch,” and the main shadchan says, “Looks good; go and try it,” this deputy shadchan will have it logged on his account that he invested this time and this phone call, and he will get paid for it. With an incentive like that, I hope to see a lot of success.
I can also share with you the good news, that I’ve joined efforts with a number of local Shadchonim, with whom I hope to set up a branch of HaGefen, possibly under a global umbrella organisation.

On 15th June ‘15, a meeting was held in the home of Rabbi Sholom Stern in London, where Rabbi Chaim Yitzchok Deblinger - one of the coordinators of HaGefen in Jerusalem - presided over a discussion to set up HaGefen in London. It was agreed to open an office, pay Shadchonim an hourly rate, and set the scene for a fundraising drive to help finance the nascent global HaGefen initiative.
The organisation is currently under the leadership and guidance of Rav Binyomin Eckstein, Dayan of the 49 St. Kilda’s Road Belz shtiebel in London. In addition, Rav Yitzchok B. Daskal of Rav Mordechai Gross’s beis din in Bnei Berak has agreed to pasken any Choshen Mishpat issues the London organisation will face.

At the moment, we are still fundraising for setting up a central office and the Shidduch Buch database. We are also speaking to local communal leaders, and making it clear that the same way a Kehilla has to provide shochtim, mohalim, dayanim and yeshivos etc., it also has to ensure there are enough shadchanim.

Speaking of fundraising, I ask of shadchanim that they give ma’aser too; ma’aser of their time… When you have made nine shidduchim, make a point of investing in one shidduch for those people who get left behind - one ‘hard’ shidduch. Instead of relegating someone as a nebbach and move on, one should be noiseh be’ol im chaveiro (the acronym of which spells נעב"ח…).

There are about half a dozen very dedicated shadchonim in the UK who do their best. Alas, their input cannot keep up with the demand, hence the "Shadchonim Crisis". With the help of local Rabbonim, Askonim and Shadchonim, it is now possible to envisage a repeat performance of HaGefen Jerusalem’s successes, so that London-based singles might also look forward to divine-inspired help to their plight.

It is my hope that this article will awaken the public from the apathy that somehow engulfs them and galvanize them into helping form a system that will hopefully stem the tide and bring about salvation to Klal Yisroel.

P. S. Dear reader, remember to speak to the Master Shadchan up above: Say chapter 121 of Psalms daily. This is because 1) It is potent and 2) because the number 121 suggests exactly what you're in for: 121 = "One to One" . . .

Phases of Jewish History

For immediate release:

London, 09 May 2006,

Rabbi Philip Ginsbury will be  signing copies of his new book "The Phases of Jewish History".  The signing will be on Tuesday May 23rd at 7.30 at the South London Synagogue in Streatham (45, Leigham Court Road, London SW16 2NF), where copies of the book will be for sale on the night.

Though published in Israel in October 2005, and widely popular in  the USA, the book has only reached the UK in the past few weeks.

"This fact-filled volume explores the history of the Jewish people in a unique  and readable way, taking us from Biblical times to the present. Each of the  phases deals with 500 years of history and depicts not only the political,  economic and social forces that kept the Jewish people alive and vibrant, but  also the leading figures who significantly affected the course of Jewish  history.

"The authors take us from the period of the Patriarchs through  Moses, David, and the birth of the Jewish People, then on to the period of the  prophets and kings, Ezra and the Great Assembly, the Talmudic period, the  Geonim, Rishonim, the Inquisition, Achronim, the two World Wars, and the State  of Israel."

Rabbi Ginsbury, 70, has been serving the Jewish Community in South London for 46  years, as a Minister and then Rabbi at Streatham Synagogue, Rabbi at Brixton  Synagogue and then when the two synagogues merged, Rabbi at South London  Synagogue where he continues.

He is still very active in the work of  London and South London. He holds a regular Monday Talmud Shiur which culminates  in a Seyyum for the completion of tractate TAANIS next Monday, and typically  will start a new tractate the following Monday.

After the completion of  Pesach 2006, Rabbi Ginsbury started a long process of a phased retirement which  will be completed with a full retirement after Pesach 2007 with 47 years of  service, even so he will be keeping on the Monday Shiur until the new tractate is completed
