Phases of Jewish History

For immediate release:

London, 09 May 2006,

Rabbi Philip Ginsbury will be  signing copies of his new book "The Phases of Jewish History".  The signing will be on Tuesday May 23rd at 7.30 at the South London Synagogue in Streatham (45, Leigham Court Road, London SW16 2NF), where copies of the book will be for sale on the night.

Though published in Israel in October 2005, and widely popular in  the USA, the book has only reached the UK in the past few weeks.

"This fact-filled volume explores the history of the Jewish people in a unique  and readable way, taking us from Biblical times to the present. Each of the  phases deals with 500 years of history and depicts not only the political,  economic and social forces that kept the Jewish people alive and vibrant, but  also the leading figures who significantly affected the course of Jewish  history.

"The authors take us from the period of the Patriarchs through  Moses, David, and the birth of the Jewish People, then on to the period of the  prophets and kings, Ezra and the Great Assembly, the Talmudic period, the  Geonim, Rishonim, the Inquisition, Achronim, the two World Wars, and the State  of Israel."

Rabbi Ginsbury, 70, has been serving the Jewish Community in South London for 46  years, as a Minister and then Rabbi at Streatham Synagogue, Rabbi at Brixton  Synagogue and then when the two synagogues merged, Rabbi at South London  Synagogue where he continues.

He is still very active in the work of  London and South London. He holds a regular Monday Talmud Shiur which culminates  in a Seyyum for the completion of tractate TAANIS next Monday, and typically  will start a new tractate the following Monday.

After the completion of  Pesach 2006, Rabbi Ginsbury started a long process of a phased retirement which  will be completed with a full retirement after Pesach 2007 with 47 years of  service, even so he will be keeping on the Monday Shiur until the new tractate is completed
