Who was George Gordon and what happened to his remains?

Who was George Gordon and what happened to his remains?

Letter from Brookwood Cemetery

Steven Derby 6 April 2022 at 10:23
To: Menasche Scharf

Dear Menasche

Thank you for sending the emails that I will read later today.

Please see attached the letter I received from Maria Giordano, Senior Administrator at Brookwood Cemetery. It is not dated but I expect was in 2019.

The Cemetery’s records are not as we might wish and what is related in the letter is based on research by John Clarke.

You can read HS2 Reburials from Euston Station https://www.john-clarke.co.uk/hs2.html

The interesting, but not enlightening, section from this article is below.

It may help to contact John Clarke directly info@john-clarke.co.uk

With best wishes,

Steven Derby MSc., BSc., Dip. RS, MBPsS

HS2 Reburials from Euston Station

The next disturbance came, not in 1940 as explained above, but in the 1960s. At that time Euston was completely rebuilt under British Railways. This was part of a major rebuilding of the West Coast Main Line. The project included electrification and many other improvements to permit train speeds of 100mph and over. Similar to HS2, the preliminary work for this project involved further encroachments of the St James’ burial ground. This time the chapel, which served the surrounding burial ground, was demolished. The work took place during the summer of 1964. All the inscriptions on the tablets in the chapel were recorded. The tablets were then carefully packed in crates and deposited in the Diocesan store. [4]  The coffin plates were also recorded for the burials in the vaults beneath the chapel. 474 cases of human remains were then removed to Brookwood. However in addition, a further 428 identifiable human remains were reburied in private graves. The whole task cost nearly £19,500.

However it remains far from clear in what form these 428 individual reburials took place. It seems unlikely they were buried en masse since this would be at odds with the definition of a private grave. I have never located any of these graves - assuming they were marked (as private graves should be). Nor do the burial registers throw any light on these additional graves or where they might be located.

Kosher Food in London

The West End

See the following sources of information, which should help your family with Kosher food over Shabbos:

All KLBD restaurants are Cholov Yisroel milk and meat is Glatt LBS.

Local places to eat (COVID-19/20 permitting?):

Please note: Due to COVID-19/20, some information below may be temporarily or permanently out of date – my sincerest apologies!

The meat at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, Bayswater is not Glatt Kosher.  Whatever your family decides to do, they need to pre-book Kosher meals before Shabbos.

Driver Gemach

Dear Reader,

Gemach Galgalim was started with the hope that Heimishe people who are travelling and need to be transported by taxi, can now be matched with Heimishe drivers, to shuttle them from/to the airport/station.

Wherever there is a sizeable Jewish community, you can now find a driver.  Our details are already listed in directories in the UK, Israel and the States.

Read further for background details:
You may recall the tragedy that befell our family on כ"א סיון תשע"ג (30th May, 2013), when my nephew משה יהודא ליב ז"ל בן יבדל לחיים טובים וארוכים ר' אהרן ני"ו, didn't wake up on the morning of his brother's wedding (which was postponed, on the instructions of the late Rabbi Shmuel Wosner OB"M). We started this Gemach לעילוי נשמתו - to perpetuate the memory of this precious soul.

For list of drivers, see: Driver List

The idea behind this Gemach is as follows:
On the one hand there are many people travelling around the world on a daily basis and do not know about the availability of Heimishe drivers.
On the other hand there are many Heimishe Yungeleit who are struggling to put bread on their family table and try their hand at airport jobs - shuttling their friends and family whenever the occasion arises.
Alas, their close circle of business is too small of a pool to enable them to earn a respectable, liveable living...

By matching up travellers with drivers, we hope to allow the customers to support Heimishe Yungeleit, so the Yungeleit will be able to gain פרנסה and confidence - whilst their customers will have a chance to fulfil the מצוה of וחי אחיך עמך.

Whoever has heard the
הספדים (=eulogies) on Moshe ז"ל will remember that this is exactly what he used to do during his short sojourn in this world, during his time in both his birthplace Antwerp and in Bene Beraq where he attended the Czernobyl Yeshiva.

By including the above text in your Gemach list, you are preparing the ground for so much
חסד and פרנסה בכבוד that this will hopefully engender.

Thank you very much and tizku lemitzvos!

Wishing you good luck with this new endeavour, in the name of the Scharf (Beck) family.
