What I want from a Mobile Telephone

I'm interested in getting a mobile which is running an operating platform that is compatible with Nokia's OS, or at least it can seamlessly exchange data.

Software Features:

• Transfer the dictionary with newly-added words to other mobile/PC

TxT: 

• Allow only TxT that are sent from Tzedek (or any other 'Kosher') Messaging Centre, which will be tasked with filtering out Loshon Hora, Gossip, time wasters etc.
• 'Learn' new words: The spell checker learns new words but it should retain them for future use, and remember them.  Not like the Nokia 7610 that ‘drops’ words as it goes over a certain limit of new words learned!  Otherwise I have to spell every new word all over again.
• Also, I shouldn't have to 'teach' the mobile new words that have been saved into the spelling checker, after each re-boot (this really happens with my existing Nokia 7610!).
• Customise Dictionaries: Yiddish & Hebrew versions, pre-loaded onto SIM/Handset, to save time when creating TxT, which usually require new words to be spelled individually and then saved for use in future TxT. Parse TxT coming to / arriving from subscribers to ‘catch’ words that are as yet not in the customised dictionary, update all users’ SIM/Handset overnight with new words.
• Predictionary: Predictive TxT - When writing an SMS, learn new words and remember it in the dictionary
• Cancel TxT messages from outbox whilst they are still there waiting to be sent, without having to switch the Profile to Aeroplane Mode
• When a recipient's number is invalid (e.g. out of order, missing a digit etc.) alert me even before I hit the Send Button
• TxT messages should not be accepted with a Song, Sound or Alert, during the time that the User is Davening - based on the Diary / Organiser

eMail:

• Copy and paste sent or received eMail content
• Only if the sender of an eMail appears in the recipients telephone contact book, summarise incoming eMail messages, using AI and send the synopsis as a TxT to the mobile handset.  

Contacts - BizCards:

• More flexibility with sent or received Business Cards
• When sending a Business Card as a TxT message, to be able to edit the message. 
• Do not send Business Cards as Business Cards only as editable TxT
• Find a name or multiple names as I type a number: sometimes I save a number under a new contact, whilst this number is already saved under an existing contact.  As a result, the caller display does not work, as it cannot show both names.
• When searching for a name, be it a person's name or a company name, it should bring up either (sometimes you remember a name but not the company and vice versa).
• Predictive Contacts - Find any contact that contains the first search character entered etc. (also referred to as Wild Cards, to describe a search using '*')
• Capacity to store about 10,000 contacts, each of which will contain Telephone numbers and other data relevant to a particular contact
• Long Contact Names (more than 12 characters)
• When transferring contact telephone book to/from Outlook / Act / etc., it should keep the Contact Labels (i.e. Nickname, Son's Tel No, Swiss Mobile) which I ad to contacts, and also keep the details within these fields.
• Contact Groups that can be transferred to another mobile - e.g. when upgrading to a new model
• Pre-Load Telephone Book/s according to user’s choice: Belz List, SSTD, VeChey Ochicho, Biz Lists etc. and update all users’ SIM/Handset overnight with new/updated records.
  The mobile vendor should be tasked with importing all contacts of the whole local community into the Telephone Book, which will save countless hours of typing, retyping, transferring, saving etc. - gaining lost time multiplied by as many contacts there are in the community!
• Feature: Copy AND Delete Contacts from the old Mobile to the new Mobile

Contacts - TxT

• Learn names: When writing a TxT message, the spell checker should allow the usage of stored names in the telephone book.  Otherwise I end up spelling a name once in the telephone book and then again in the TxT messages. 

Contacts - Integrate

• Synchronise Calendar, Address Book, Memo and other Notes with PC: Transfer contacts to another mobile - Guide How to transfer contacts and calendar from Nokia C5-03 to Nokia 6300 4G, To Do Items to other Apps (e.g. Outlook) or MacOS (iCal or Entourage).
• Allow Contact BizCards to be exchanged with a Bluetooth compatible Cordless Landline Telephone Handset

Calendar / Diary / Organiser

• Transfer Calendar Items from one day to the next
• Copy Calendar Items from Calendar to TxT Messages, eMail etc.
• Calendar to have default ON for Alarm
• Set recurring appointments for a day, a week, a month or a year - and/or workweekdays (i.e carpooling) only or weekends (i.e. play tennis) only - or a certain day / set of days of the month (i.e. mortgage payment)
• Connect Calendar to Address Book (or Contacts) so that if I want to set a reminder to call someone I can have a option in both Calendar and Address Book to Make A Reminder/Note (sometimes described in Technical Specifications as "Shared Memory" or "Dynamic Memory")
• Davening and Learning Times (Shiur, SYDTTW etc.) for the local area should be visible in the Organiser
• Zmanim for Shabbos etc. should be set automatically by the User's Locale

Profiles:

• It should have TIMED profiles - from 7am to 9:45am Silent Profile on Mondays, Thursdays and Rosh Chodesh etc. and on other days from 7am to 9am, which switches to Outdoor Profile afterwards automatically
• Set a Profile with exceptions, e.g. allow the wife's call to ring the call-in signal - even when the Silent Profile is in force.
• Similarly, when setting the Meeting Profile and DND is ON, allow calls to filter through for those callers whose BizCard were set to be allowed through even in Silent or Meeting Profile.
• Incoming calls or TxT should 'wait' until the DND-type Profiles have switched to General Profiles and only then it should alert the User of their arrival.

Hardware features:

• Size:
• The smallest size should be inside a writing pen. The earpiece on top and the mouthpiece at the bottom tip.  The keypad should reveal itself when the two halves of the pen open up.
• The medium size should not exceed the depth of a Shirt pocket.
• The largest size should be as a C5 envelope: Large enough to act as a Tablet but should not exceed the depth of a Jacket bosom pocket.

Handset features

• SmartPhone-like handset
• Speakerphone
• Touchscreen
• Image Capture
• Audio Integration
• Voice Capture (MP3 or any format that can be transferred as a computer file)
• Cordless Recharger
• Battery Capacity
• Navigation App should work independently; unlike some Mobile where the Navigation App only works with the In-Car's Broadband Connection. 
• Viewing captured / received images should be possible only via the link to a PC / Tablet
• An App, like the Nokia PC Suite should allow to manage mobile content on a PC / Tablet

Display:

• When a caller answers a call, it should indicate so on the display

Calls:

• Switch Call Forwarding to landline on automatically, if and when there is no reception due to lack of cell coverage in the area
• Allow a customised TxT to be sent after three rings, when someone is calling and you cannot answer
• Allow a customised TxT to be sent after three rings, when someone is calling and you are in the middle of another call
• The Call Duration should be listed for ALL recent calls; not for just the most recent one

Connectivity:

• BlueTooth that ALWAYS works with another device
• Infra Red
• USB I, II
• WiFi

Contract Details:

• One to Five Years
• 1,000 Minutes p/m, anytime, anywhere, any network - Transferable to next months

I started this document on 21/11/1995, when the mobile was becoming more ubiquitous and the prevalent models were I-mate SP5, XDA (O2) or Treo, (Orange), E-Ten, or a PalmOS / SmartPhone, N95, Nokia N95 8GB, N82, E51, E61i.

Updated 19/01/2025: We now have 4G and 5G, so the Nokia models listed henceforth would be ideal - if only they answer to all the original requirements: Nokia 105 4G, Nokia 110 4G, Nokia 6700, Nokia 6700, Nokia 8000 4G, Nokia 8110 4G - Do Not Touch!,
