Gas, Gaza and Gazoline I

The secret is out: the Civilised World aka United Nations proclaims to all and sundry that the bully in the playing field is the eternal cause of all bad things that happened since the start of civilisation, when the Creator came down from above and handed Moses tow tablets.
With these two tablets, another item - albeit intangible - came along, as the Gemorro tells us: "Why oh why is the mountain Choreb nicknamed Sinai? Because thereon an everlasting hatred (lit. "Sinah" in Hebrew) descend, pitting all nations against the chosen nation.

However, we Jews are in no small part to blame for fuelling the hatred.  By sitting back and folding our arms saying "we are in the right and nobody in the world will be ordering us around" is not going to explain to the man on the street what we suffered up until this day, what we are going through now and most importantly, what the Arabs had in store for us on our upcoming Day of Judgement (Rosh HaShana 5775).
As a small example, take the fact that the only ones using the Hebrew word for Gaza "עזה" as a meta tag - are the Arabs.  See for yourself: go to Google, click on News and then click on Search Tools, followed by the setting "Past Hour" in the second Search Tool option and "Sorted by date" in the third.  All you will see is the Palestinian authored websites, in the English language.

Original in Hebrew....translated into English with a few comments from me. Having been down there a few times, I can personally vouch for the accuracy of this letter. On a personal note, before going down South last night for a pizza delivery to IDF soldiers, my daughter gave me a stack of letters and pictures from children in our community to distribute to the delivery. After giving the soldiers 60 pies, I said, "Wait, I have to give you the letters from the kids..." A soldier stopped everything and said -- "THOSE are the most important...much more than the pizza...and hugged a pile of letters that I gave him."

Am Yisroel Chai! 

A soldier on the border writes:
What's happening here in the staging area [area where soldiers prepare to enter Gaza] is beyond comprehension, not rationally, not emotionally and beggars the imagination. 

Almost every hour a car shows up overflowing with food, snacks, cold drinks, socks, underwear, undershirts, hygiene supplies, wipes, cigarettes, backgammon and more. They're coming from the North and the Centre, from manufacturers, from companies and private businesses, from prisons, Charedim and Settlers, from Tel Aviv and even Savion. 

Every intersection on the way down here we get stopped, not by the police, but by residents giving out food. What is amazing is that the entire situation wasn't organized and everyone is coming on their own without coordination between the folks coming. 

They're writing letters and blessings, how they're thinking of us all the time. There are those who spent hours making sandwiches, so they're as perfect and comforting as possible. 

Of course representatives of Chabad are here to help soldiers put on Tefillin and distributing Cha'Ta'Ts (Chumash, Tehillim, Tanya) for every troop transport and Breslov are showing up to the border and dancing with the soldiers with great joy. 

The Charedim are coming from their yeshivas to ask the names of the soldiers with their mothers' names so that the whole yeshiva can pray for them. It should be mentioned that all of this is done under the threat of the terrorist tunnels and rockets in the area. 
Soroka Hospital (in Be'er Sheva) today looks like a 5 star hotel. A wounded friend who was recently discharged told us how the MasterChef truck is parked outside and is preparing food for the wounded. 

It goes without saying the amount of prayer services that are going on. On the religious front as well, there are lectures and Torah classes, all the food is obviously Kosher. Shacharis, Mincha, and Ma'ariv with Sifrei Torah. They're giving out tzitzit and Tehillim by the hundreds. It's become the new fashion! The Rabbi of Maglan [Special Forces unit] told me that almost the entire unit has started wearing them, because the Army Rabbinate has been giving out tzitzit that wick away sweat. They're gaining both a Mitzvah and a high quality undershirt. We've started calling them "Shachpatzitzit" (a portmanteau of the Hebrew term for body armour and tzitzit). We're having deep conversations late into the night without arguments, without fights and we find ourselves agreeing on most stuff. 

We're making lots of jokes at Hamas's expense and without politics. There's lots more to add but my battery is running low and the staff has been requesting someone give a class on Likutei MoharaN (Breslov). 

How happy is the nation that is like this!

WASHINGTON ― Though Israel should never carelessly ignore U.S. pressure, it nevertheless must resist current U.S. efforts to impose a cease-fire on the Israel-Hamas conflict while Israel remains besieged by rockets and tunnels.
To be sure, the United States has provided Israel with vital military, economic and diplomatic support since its founding after World War II and, without bedrock U.S. support, Israel could become dangerously isolated.
This time, however, Jerusalem must accept the growing friction in U.S.-Israeli relations of recent weeks, ignore Washington’s pressure to cease military operations and finish the job for three basic reasons.
First, Israel knows best how to protect itself from the dangers emanating from a terrorist entity on its border that no other nation would tolerate ― nor, frankly, be pressured by Washington to tolerate.
Hamas, which calls for murdering Jews and destroying Israel, has launched thousands of rockets across the Jewish state not just in recent weeks but for years, and its surprisingly sophisticated network of tunnels that Israel was fortunate to discover as part of Operation Protective Edge was designed to enable its operatives to cross the border to kill or capture scores, if not hundreds, of Israelis.
In fact, Israel learned from captured Hamas fighters during its current operation that Hamas planned a massive terror operation during the Jewish High Holidays in late September, with hundreds of fighters crossing into Israel at night and quickly positioning themselves to kill or capture as many Israeli civilians as possible.
No country can live under constant attack from the air or the threat of infiltration from numerous openings in the ground, and it is Israel, not the United States, that suffers directly when Hamas hits its targets.
Second, Hamas ― not Israel ― can bring peace immediately by halting its attacks, dismantling its rockets and filling its tunnels. As Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor put it aptly, “When it is quiet in Israel, it will be quiet in Gaza.”
After all, Hamas is the aggressor, Israeli the responder. Hamas seeks to kill as many innocent Israelis as possible and, by hiding in schools, mosques and hospitals, force Israel to kill as many innocent Gazans as possible.
Even while battling a genocidal group under such circumstances, Israel seeks to limit death and destruction by warning Gazans of coming attacks, treating Gazans who are caught in the crossfire at Israeli hospitals and restoring power to Gaza after Hamas hits power lines.
Thus, in its efforts to end the current Israeli-Hamas conflict and promote long-term Israeli-Palestinian peace, the United States would be well-advised to shift its public pressure from Israel to Hamas.
Third, Jerusalem has legitimate concerns about whether Washington understands the essence of this conflict, the nature of its combatants, and the best way forward for Israel in its turbulent neighborhood.
Although the United States is Israel’s most important ally, only Jerusalem can decide how to protect its people from relentless terrorist attack in a global environment that unfairly targets the Jewish state and excuses its enemies.

Disaster averted by alert lorry driver

Wednesday 8:34AM 09/03/2011, Clapton Common

Two blond-haired girls, aged 9 & 10 casually crossed the northern part of the pelican crossing near the Clapton Common pond.  They pressed the button on the traffic light to replace the "Red man" for a "Green man".  Apparently they were in a rush because they didn't wait for the light to change.
The oncoming morning rush hour traffic came to an abrupt halt, miraculously stopping without causing any collision between the truck hauling building materials and the vehicles behind it.
The lorry driver was as shocked as the onlookers on the street, as the two youngsters chatted amicably whilst walking on the road like sitting ducks.
One bystander reprimanded them to be more careful but they shrugged him off as if he were a mere nuisance, disturbing their conversation with his nonsensical, unsolicited advice.
This article is not aimed at finding whom to blame for this near-tragedy, only to highlight a possible gap in the curriculae of our otherwise excellent schools and Chadorim.
Schools are reminded to ensure that their student body is well trained in the subjects that will help them in their future life.  Educators should allow some space in their busy schedules to teach their pupils survival skills so they can implement the lessons that they were taught. Part of the effort should be to engrave into the conscience of their charges, how to cross the roads safely and with traffic in mind.
To the parents of these girls - and for the same matter, to all parents - please teach your children the rudimentary of safely walking the streets.  You will ensure their safety, the time of the many volunteers in Hazolo and the anguish of passersby, like the undersigned

I have been following the on-page debate about activism in the community. I had decided to offer my two-pence worth, however as the weeks flew by it looked to me as if I'd be wasting my time - given the long time since your excellent documentary first appeared.

The Inbox letter of this week's Mishpacha (#516) gave me the impetus to act: it's not too late...

The above introduction would describe the 'middle of the road Askan', who says to himself "my input is too little, it's too late anyway etc.".

To them I say: Please D.U.Y.: Don't Underestimate Yourself!

Together as a group it is possible to achieve - a joint effort is worth all the input. Especially with today's e-collaboration tools (i.e. CrowdSourcing, ProjectSharing) and a young generation of leaders - YOU included - it allows us to network and so build communal services as never before.

Senior askonim would not look down at us (another 'reason' to delay our involvement): we will make the older generation proud, with the knowledge that their lifelong dedication will continue to bear the fruit they so much gave for.

My son was born premature and confined to an incubator for the first month of his life.  With the day of the Pidyon HaBen fast approaching, I was at a loss as to how to do it the proper way.  I mean you can do the Pidyon HaBen anywhere but it would have been nice to hold it at home, in a familiar setting (at least for the father…).

After consulting with a number of people it was agreed that I will need to call upon the good services of Rabbi Kernkraut, who – in the course of his work on behalf of people needing medical assistance – knows whom to contact for just this purpose.  Problem was (and still is), it’s hard to get in touch with him as he’s constantly on the move and this happened twenty five years ago when there were hardly any mobiles around.

This was occupying my thoughts when I went to visit a family friend from Eretz Yisroel, who was hospitalised in the Wellington Hospital in St John's Wood, who fell ill whilst visiting in London.

As I entered the suite, I saw a new face sitting at the patient’s bedside.  Upon asking for his name, I was given the much sought after identity of the person I was looking for!  Not only did he spare me the return trip by underground, he graciously offered to help me have the use of a consultation hall in the Homerton hospital, where we held the Pidyon HaBen with friends and family around as if it would have been at home!

Had I come five minutes later…

My friend was driving home from work and offered me a lift (hitch/tremp).  He dropped me at Manor House Tube Station, on the side going into town.  In order to take the 253 bus home I needed to cross the main road.  It was a rather bad weather so I didn’t want to wait at the pedestrian crossing for the light to turn green, so I descended the steps to use the underpass of the underground station. 
As I was passing the exit that leads to Woodberry Down I met a Yid with a suitcase looking up and down.  
I asked him where he’s going and he told me that he wants to go to Stamford Hill by foot.  
This was Friday afternoon…  I took him back to the other side of the station and showed him the 253 Bus stop.
Had I not been dropped on the wrong side, 
Had I decided to use the traffic lights,
Had I decided to ignore this lost Jew…

When Rabbi Meir Shapiro זצ"ל announced the idea of Daf haYomi, it was enthusiastically accepted by the millions of Torah-true Jews the world over.  It is well know that in the late  thirties, people leaving Gdansk for the New World, arrived in Sao Paolo and re-joined the Daf haYomi Shiur they were learning before leaving Poland a couple of weeks earlier.

What is even more astounding about the Daf is that (in the current and previous cycle at least) there is a connection between the weekly Sedra (Parsha) and the Daf on a continuous, constant basis. 

Learners of the Daf will notice that - inevitably - there will be a Sugya (discussion) in the Gemara that brings a Posuk (verse) of the weekly Sedra.  Sometimes, when no clue is forthcoming from the weekly portion, there will be a Rashi commentary on the Yomtef falling in that week which will be mentioned in the Daf.

It is as if the programming of the Daf haYomi cycle was almost pre-planned as precise as Rabbi Hillel’s Luach (who was Kove’a (established) for us all the Z’manim of the new month, year and Yomtefs - until this present day).

This all points to the age old saying HaSh-m, the Jewish People and the Torah are one!

In issue #508 Eytan Kobre laments the fact that people are quick to pad judgment on others without first getting out fact from myth.
Indeed,  the admonition by  to judge one's neighbour favourably ends with the words "lekaf zechus", which can be translated literally as a "spoonful of merit".
If the Chachomim would have been in our generation, they would have told us to judge every person with a "pot" full of merit.
But then again, who am I to judge...
May we all be judged favorably by HaShem and by people!

- The message has to go out to the Oylem: we're losing 100,000 people every year - Rabbi Noach Weinberg
- Only when parents will demonstrate to their children that one has to pay for the shopping on the spot and refrain from putting it on the account, this will have a very positive influence on them. 

 At the moment they see a dual standard: Parents warn their children to eat only strictly supervised (Kosher) food; whilst their food hasn't been paid at all for a couple of weeks. 

 In the mean time the shopkeeper is carrying the load of many customers who pay late, he in turn needs to borrow from the banks at 27%, when he finally pays the distributor he has already borrowed himself at 27% from his bank and then goes to pay the manufacturer who had to take out a loan at 27% to pay for the raw materials, that were also bought with a 27% penalty. 

 The total loss all around is 27% X 4= 108% increase in Kosher food prices, how can people be expected to live like that? - Rabbi Yochanan De Grun

Introduction: In this Blog, I will list my observations that came to mind when planning a Kosher Mobile service for Jewish communities around the world.

Main Objectives: What are the main objectives of this project?

1. To fulfil Rabbinic ordinations with regards to the proper use of Mobile phones - both dumb and smart - according to Halachah (= Jewish law).

Mobiles were created for the holy purpose of recording Shiurim on Kol HaLoshon, not for causing disturbances to the Tefillos!

2. Mobile phones have become more than just a two-way communication device. 

Nowadays it is possible to acquire a handset with the following appliances all rolled into one: Telephone, 2-way Radio, Pager, Text Messenger, eMail, Calendar/Organiser, Music and Video Player/Recorder, Camera, Radio, Global Positioning System (GPS), Games Console, Web Browser and Calculator - to mention just the main uses. 

Some of the above-mentioned features may be detrimental to the development of/and long-term behaviour of a Halachah-abiding Jew - especially a Hassidic Jew.
3. As a consequence of the above development, people have become virtual (pun intended) slaves to their mobile handsets: 

Users lose their bearings when TxTing (foul language is used where it would never had occurred to them before they became trapped), precious time is going to utter waste (TxT, eMail and Voice/Video Recordings are disseminated in ever growing circles to no one’s benefit in particular). 

Self-respect is being eroded to the point of no return (talking and walking in public spaces, disrupting Prayers, lectures and meetings, upsetting neighbours, colleagues or passers-by by vocal disturbances). At this juncture, it is imperative to mention the negative influence imparted onto ones children, who either look askance at their parent/s or worse, start imitating them with worrisome consequences (addiction to computer games, browsing the web, TxTaholics etc.).

III. Background to Proposed Solution
1. To completely curtail its use by issuing a blanket ruling will not achieve its aim, as it cannot be enforced and people will continue using them.
2. In order to help people phase out their non-approved handsets, a viable alternative needs to be introduced that will convince the target audience of: our sincerity in trying to help them change their destructive behaviour and that they are not going to be worse off financially by switching to the new handsets.
3. If the solution works in the confines of the Belz community, to roll it out to other Chassidic groups like Gur and ultimately to the whole of the Ultra-Orthodox community. 

Eventually this could be expanded to cover other Jewish communities across the country/continent/world.

IV. Proposed solution
1. Create a bulk user contract (or “Group”) with a Mobile Operator - preferably with global presence I.e. Vodafone, Orange - who is prepared to meet the Terms & Conditions laid down by us:
2. Customised Handsets, SIM Cards, Operating System, and Menu / Graphical User Interface.
Find / Design the right Handset: Large buttons, Bluetooth (for Earpiece, Printing of Faxes etc.), detachable half, consisting of: 

Antenna inside the top/Lid-half, which slides off the Lid where the screen is located and the SIM, keypad and Battery on bottom part/Base-half, which can serve as a clock, calculator and telephone book. 

This way one can detach the top half containing the Antenna before entering Shul so that no reception is possible - still the non-Mobile Telephone features are preserved!

Idea: Wrist-Mobile “Hendy-Bendy” with a detachable base. Base Part contains the antenna and SIM card, Flexible Keyboard on Strap, VoiceMail & TxT remains on Server during the time when the Profile “Silent” or “Shul” is in effect. Develop Fashion based around the wearable Mobile, to finance the Kosher Model.

SIM Cards should ideally include all information (Telephone Book, TxT, Diary etc.) so that every user’s handset is seamlessly accessible to messages/updates from Group headquarters.

The new 2GB SIM card format from SAGEM should be the choice solution as it answers to the requirements of the feature mentioned in the previous paragraph

An added benefit for the all-in SIM format, negates the need for high-volume Memory Cards that allow the storage of space consuming multimedia files like video and audio Clips.

3. Design customised User Manuals (See ‘More Features‘ below), Marketing collateral, Customer Service.
4. Prepare a Halachic FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) pamphlet with answers, peppered with pertinent messages to reinforce the move towards change.
5. Calling Plans according to set criteria (I.e. gender, age, married status etc.) to decide whether to offer TxT as a service, for example. See Page (?) below for more details.

V. The way forward (or: how to execute the project)

A. Design an infrastructure that will support the whole concept in terms of hardware (mobile, SIM, billing Platform), software (Menu, OS), processes (monthly billing, legal issues, user support culture) and human interaction, administrative and commercial considerations.

B. Put together a Monthly Plan for every user
1. Mehadrin Min HaMehadrin: Novices and Kley Kodesh should be offered a no-frills handset and Plan. Maybe they should be able to accept BizCards, no TxT!
2. Mehadrin: Expert users may subscribe to an advanced Plan, which will include some of the features that they are accustomed to. Some services will be curtailed, based on criteria set down by the Halachic authority.
3. Kosher: Heavy-duty users: Salesmen, Engineers and other road-based workers (Mashgichim, Property dealers etc.) may choose a Plan that will include TxT but no access to WAP (= Web for Mobiles).

C. Allocate human resources to:
Canvas people with influence, potential customers and the public at large.
Train shopkeepers into the new mindset, the nuances of the new service etc.
Man a helpdesk equipped with answers to any possible (or impossible) scenario.

D. Customise the Interface
1. Menu to contain only approved / Kosher elements. Example: Games should be deleted.

E. Design specific services to facilitate the scheme from all possible angles.
1. Allow for PAC so that subscribers can keep their numbers
2. Allow services to be switched on / off according to: Age (Bochur) /Status (Biz Man/Commercial Activity) /Location (Shul/School - See: More Features)
3. Filter TxT Messages by Internal (intra-contract) or External (Biz Associate / Overseas etc.); the first will be blocked, unless it is of a biz nature, whilst the latter will be allowed through.

F. Prepare a full Corporate identity kit (Application Forms, Manuals, Posters and the like):
1. Application Forms: 

The regular Fields (Name, Last Name, Bank details for Direct Debit etc.), additional Fields like: Date of Birth, Marital Status and Directory preference (if a subscriber does not want their number to appear in printed / pre-loaded telephone books.

3. Marketing collateral: Posters, Adverts, Memento’s, Brochures, Flyers and the like

G. Explain, Train and Contain.
1. Launch a marketing campaign that will show the benefits of the scheme. Points to emphasise could be: “Not every feature on your handset is life-threatening; do you know which one?”, “Addiction to wireless communication devices could seriously hamper your connection to yourself - wake up!”, “Hold on! Your Neshomo-battery also needs recharging, put away your handset for one hour a day.”, “Mobile interference could cause interference to your prayers - beware!”
2. Allocate resources to ensure the changeover runs as smooth as possible. 

Expand the plan continually to assure happy and profitable transition.
3. Keep abreast of potential hick-up’s and problems that may throw the whole plan into disarray.
4. Send a weekly TxT with Tips, Advice, Halachic Guidance. Give them the choice that they may opt out by sending a service command (I.e. #246#). 

Alternatively, this could be achieved by including them in the bill printout, along with news relating to the scheme - designed specifically for Kosher mobile users / subscribers.

Tips: Memorise any mobile number: drop the first two digits when repeating it to yourself or to someone else; as it‘s a set of three digits you will remember it with ease),

Advice: (never leave the power cord in the mobile overnight, as it saps the battery life) and

Halachic Guidance: (Loshon HoR’a is also prohibited over the waves. . . ) on Mobile use (after 3 months, send them only on a monthly basis),

Women should refrain from calling their husband’s / son’s mobile during Davening (another word for Divinations or Prayers)

Example: According to Rabbi Wosner’s Ruling that the Laws of Yichud apply to internet use, this should be extended to Web-based Mobile handsets.

H. Help alleviate the dependency on mobiles:
1. Install more lines in public places (Shul/Kollel/School), ideally mobile handsets with a pay-phone mechanism.
2. Install a voice message system in public places, just like in the Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem, where students can ‘pick up’ voice messages using their personal Pin.

I. Quantitative Data:
1. The Belz community can muster a sizeable contract of 1,000 users (updated on 03/08/2026, from the previous figure, which was 500 users). A fairly good price should be achievable from one of the large players.
2. Collate bills from Monthly subscribers and expenses from PAYG’ers. Total it up and halve it, then divide the amount by the sum-total of users; this should be the basic monthly fee for all users. Alternatively, ensure that the Mehadrin Min HaMehadrin subscribers are subsidised by the Kosher subscribers, further incentivising Mehadrin subscribers to Up-Grade down to Mehadrin Min HaMehadrin Calling Plans.
3. Put part of the savings that are achieved by managing a bulk contract back into the kitty. 

Example: Discounts will be given if the allocated minutes were only used up by 50%: they get a 75% deduction / payback.

Conversely, if a subscriber over-talks hi plan, it is automatically ‘banded’ to a higher use value, resulting in a jump of 25% cost on top of his previous month’s bill.

J. Commercial aspects
1. We should follow the models that were tried and tested in the field by Israeli (Mirs, M. Elbaum) and American (Rosenberg) Kosher Mobile operators. Don’t reinvent the wheel . . .
2. The concept should be developed with an eye on certain segments of the non-Jewish market, where our application of the customised package offers a solution to a problem. 

Examples: A company with a large workforce being given free handsets to communicate with their offices/colleagues, Students on campus, Soldiers and other service persons.
3. Arrange with The Carphone Warehouse to sell handsets for £5.00 without a SIM card.
4. Network Operator has to agree to cancel access to Internet at source, not when it arrives to subscribers (when it’s sometimes too late, as it causes havoc with the spiritual well-being of our community!)

K. Legal Issues
1. User agreement to be limited with certain services: we need to address the possible legal issue about Human Rights infringement, where a person cannot be prevented from accessing readily available communication channels by a bunch of religious fanatics.
2. There is a precedent, in the form of the ban on mobile phone use in-flight; any traveller could argue that his human rights were violated. Similarly, a Ultra-Religious Jew’s life is violated by the mere fact that he has access to the negative aspects of mobile ‘phone usage.
3. User agreement to be limited in Shul - see previous point, which is valid here too.
4. Possible solution: Every subscriber automatically becomes a holder of one Non-Voting Share in the company. 

This entitles him to full membership and obligates him to keep the rules of the company, namely Halachic Rulings according to Rabbinical Guidance, which may be inserted, altered and deleted according to said instructions. Every person who signs this waiver, agrees to forego his resorting to Law Courts with the view of getting redress and / or claim any form of damages for being subjected to aforementioned Halachic rules.

Conclusion:
At this juncture, it is important to remember that it will take the full and continuous co-operation from Rabbonim, Dayonim and Lay Leaders to implement such a drastic change in the Heimishe society.

LIST OF POSSIBLE FURTHER ENHANCEMENTS

1 More Features
Install a device in Shul that forces all mobiles being brought onto the premises to switch from ‘General’ Profile to ‘Shul’ (= “Pilot Mode” or “Silent” and non-vibrating) Profile.

Profiles: Create a pre-programmed Profile: ‘Shul’ (= Silent and non-vibrating). Set the Profile to turn itself on automatically at set Prayer times: from 7:00AM to 9:00AM for Shacharis (6:55AM on BeHaB, 9:30AM on Rosh CHodesh etc.), 7:00PM to 7:20PM for Mincha (or follow the Zman of Light Kindling) and 9:00PM to 10:20PM for Kevi’as ‘Ittim and Ma’ariv. Create a short-timed (5 minutes) Profile for Asher Yotzar, Bentchen and Kiddush Levono.

Calendar / Organiser: Create a pre-programmed set of Reminders / Alerts for Zmanim (Neytz HaChamo, Shabbat & Yomtef, Zman K”SH&Tefillah, Selichos (Play the Ring Tone: Yisroel, ’Am Kedoshim …) Ta’anis (Alos) etc.) for at least three years ahead.

Bulk TxT should be disabled from handsets; instead, whoever needs to send TxT to many, he can TxT it for free to a designated 3-digit Service Command number (I.e. ‘#898#’) and it will be sent to a pre-defined group of his choice (e.g.: Belz 98, Belz 49, Mekadshey Shevi’I’, Yagdil Torah, Daf Yomi, Family)

Customise User Manuals: Yiddish & Hebrew versions, Emphasise instructions on facilitating the easy transition from non-Kosher to Kosher handsets, tips & tricks for efficient use of mobiles, help with Menu’s and how to get the best out of the OS (I.e. Alerts, Alarms and Reminders in the Calendar/Organiser)

Offer a Free Data-Backup service to Business users, the reason being that hey tend to add many contacts that are outside the confined circle of the Pre-Loaded, Heimishe lists.

Calendar items to be sent and saved into users’ Calendar: “Yagdil Torah, where are you now?”, “Shiur tonight by Rav Babad” or “Wedding this evening at YH“, with a couple of hours reminder prior to event.

Incentives to push punters onto the new system:
1. Free and unlimited intra-group/contract calls; stress that they are not deducted from Free Minutes on the Calling Plan.
2. Free Roaming in Israel, USA, Canada and Belgium. Cut costs to users by combining their fixed lines into their mobile account - see next paragraph.
3. Free Net-Bit recharger with every handset

Combine costs of Fixed lines with Mobile costs by abolishing all Fixed telephone lines accounts,
4. Allowing for more than one handset using the same number, i.e. at home.
5. Use existing ‘020’ number by prefixing it with ‘072’, example: 07974160252 becomes 07288026143 (replacing my home telephone number of 020 88026153. This will enable callers to quickly find new mobile numbers, as they only have to replace the ‘020 ’with‘072‘
6. Exception: existing users who will want to keep their numbers,
7. Callers to old mobile numbers will be TxT’d a Biz Card with new Mobile number of subscriber whom they tried to reach, along with an explanatory TxT: ‘This number has now changed.  Please replace it with telephone number +447230149586 as follows: Options >Find Number >Options >Add to Contacts >Update Existing".

Mehadrin Min HaMehadrin users However, or for those calling from a (fixed) landline, they’ll get a recorded message:  “This telephone number has now changed; the new number +447230149586.  Please make a note of this new number for future reference”.  The recorded message should repeat the new mobile number twice (using TxT2Speech), so that the caller has ample time to note it down.

8. Subscriber will get a missed call TxT with callers CLI so that he can call them back if he wants it,

9. Fax lines to be supplanted with a Fax2Mobile service, where one can print out received faxes using Bluetooth
10. Business users with an all-digital PBX in their place of work may opt for a ‘Follow-Me’ solution. This will turn their desk-based-handset into a replacement to their mobile, for as long as they are within a certain radius of their desk.
11. Offer free transcription of TxT dictated by subscriber, to ease the transition from TxT to non-TxT handsets (for those whom it was decided that they should not get TxT on their Service offering (I.e. Bochurim). Use Voice2TxT for accepting instructions, once translated into TxT, use TxT2Voice to transmit message to recipient in a pre-recorded universal, male voice (female for woman subscribers).
12. Play a Male voice on the Voice Mail Box. If both parties to the call are male subscribers switch to Yiddish messages. This will add to creating an environment that induces stricter adherence to behavioural patterns of a Halachah-obeying Jew.
13. Any dead number (“Sorry, this number is not in use”) to be forwarded onto the TxT based support infrastructure, for updating users’ telephone books - not before verifying that it is not a temporary glitch of the Mobile Network . . .
14. Update all Telephone Books in the Group with unlocked corporate 08456 numbers; an added bonus to save money = happy subscribers
15. Web services: As many mobile users are now connected to their Always-On devices (Blackberry,iPhone, Communicator etc.), the web should be opened up to allow WAP content from approved sources and sites (See our White Paper on: “Kosher Web - Anno 2009“)
16. Involve the Heimishe Dealers (Rose Communications, Phone City, Rabbi Yosef Regal etc.)

19. Offer paid advertising to be included in the preloaded listing of the Telephone Book of every handset. When looking for a dry cleaner, the user searches for “dry cl” and finds the local one. This department should help cover expenses of this project.
20. Place advertisements from Sponsors on advertising collateral, enclose Gift Vouchers / Coupons to “good-behaviour” members (I.e. if they don’t overspend their allocated monthly minutes Plan),
21. Idea: Free Mobile Recharging in Shul on special Slot Stands to avoid disturbance during services

Yes, you are trusting supremely in Google to basically ignore the 90% of you contacts that already existed, though from Samsung's skittishness regarding this functionality you may well be better off that way. (BTW the phone contacts that do also already exist in Google show a little letter "g" to the right when you look at your phone contacts).

For peace of mind I did experiment with a single, already existing contact to verify how Google treated it. 

One fear of course is that some records may have had out of date information that then merged with current information - which of course is precisely why it is so important to maintain a single authoritative database and sync with it.

By the way, what I've found - after much head scratching - is that the contacts that weren't syncing were of two types:

1) the contacts that I had in my previous (non-android, basic flip) phone but not in Google contacts, and 

2) any new phone contacts if not created as gMail contacts. 

In the first case, Verizon copied contacts between the old and new phones, but those "phone only" contacts were then beyond the reach of the syncing function. 

To avoid the second case, when you create a new contact on the phone you'll want to create a Google contact not a Device Contact. 

Either can be selected from a pull down list that you may be prompted with or access at the top of the new contact's screen. 

The reason all this matters at least for me is that I have for some years used gmail to maintain my master contacts list. It's something the cloud is actually good for. 

And it's a function into which this new appliance - my phone - needs to integrate smoothly. 

This database must accumulate and display the same information irrespective of which device accesses it.

This "fix" even seems to have improved how contact information displays on the phone. Annoying enough that "ringtone" and "vibration pattern" are fields displayed by default, favoured over address and notes. But I'd previously had trouble accessing these fields at all other than by editing the contact.

With heavy and aching hearts we approach the שלשים of Moshe Yehuda Leib Scharf Z''L, who tragically was Niftar in his sleep on the very morning of his brother's Chasunah. It is hard to believe that already a month has passed since that tragic day when the Chernobyl Yeshivah was shockingly plunged into mourning.  A month since the earth was soaked with the tears of a family in mourning at the burial of their twenty year old child and brother. A month since the heady excitement of preparations for their eldest child's Chasunah was horrifically twisted into the bitter taste of mourning. 

Moishy, as he was fondly known by his family and chaveirim was a serious and energetic bachur, loved and admired by all who knew him.  He combined a serious demeanor and a joyous personality seamlessly into one.  Mashgichim and Bachurim would marvel at the unmatched hasmadah and deveikus he displayed during his learning and Tefillah. 

Many incidents abound in which Moishy's trademark wit and deep sense of responsibility to his friends are displayed. 

One unforgettable example is one which was recounted during the Shivah. 

Approached by a prospective father- in- law for information, Moishy gave a shining report of the specific Bachur's qualities. Consequently, the man inquired about the Bachur's Chavrusah. Moishy could not bear to tell him the truth – that the bachur did not have a Chavrusah – thereby possibly ruining his chances for a favourable outcome, so in an unbelievable show of sensitivity, he replied innocently,  "I am his chavrusah!" He then approached the Bachur and learnt with him that very day in order to ensure that this would not have been a lie!

This is just one of the many unbelievable stories which illustrate the caring and thought which embodied Moishy's every action.

On כ''א סיון תשע''ג, in his sleep, the night before his brother was to be married, Moishy returned his holy Neshama to the Ribono Shel Olam, a pure Korban Tzibur.  After helping his parents settle into their flat in Bnei Brak,  he had returned to Yeshivah, completely healthy and well, to sleep for the night. He had not wanted to miss even one day of Torah learning.  Moishy left this world in the middle of doing Mitzvos, and from the holiest place, his Yeshivah, to return to his Maker untainted and pure.

From the Yeshivah shel Matah, up to the Yeshivah shel Ma'alah, he was accompanied by his Torah, Mitzvos and Ma'asim Tovim, to his lofty place in Gan Eden.

ככלות השבעה להבחור החשוב משה יודא לייב שארף ז"ל , ממצוייני ישיבת טשערנוביל בבני ברק בן אחינו-גיסנו הרה"ח ר' אהרן שארף נ"י מאנטווערפען - שנפטר מדום לב בבוקרו של יום כ"א סיון למגינת לב כל יודעיו ומכריו.

וישכם משה, משה בְהַשְכָמָה עָלָה, ובהשכמה ירד. משה יודא לייב ז"ל בן אהרן שליט"א היה עולה על יצועו אחרי יום גדוש בתורה, תפלה וגמילות חסדים וכבר הספיק לקרות ק"ש שעל המיטה עד שעלה עמוד השחר, ובהשכמה ירד התגבר כָּאַרִי - כשמו ארי' לייב - לרדת ממיטתו כדי להתכונן לעבודת השם זו תפלה מתוך לימוד התורה בחברותא. ואכן הושיבו ישיבה על קברו בצורת חבורה חדשה שנוסדה לעילוי נשמתו הזכה אשר בשם "וישכם משה" יכונה בתוככי ישיבת טשרנוביל בה גדל משך כמה וכמה שנים עדי נקרא בישיבה של מעלה בתוך כותלי הישיבה דלמטה.

מ"י לא נפקד כהיום הזה - יום אשר נהפך מיום טוב לאבל ומששון ליגון - יום אשר בו שיברו קרובי המשפחה לשמוח ולרקוד בחתונת אחיו הבכור של הנפטר, והנה "אוי וויי" נלקח מאיתנו בחיר הישיבה, וכלם נקבצו באו לך להובילו למנוחת עולמים, כל יוצאי עיר מולדתו אנטווערפען, כל האורחים שהגיעו לחתונה של הרבי מפשעווארסק שליט"א וכל הידידים שעשו דרכם לבני ברק להשתתף בשמחה המשפחתית - כלם עמדו המומים דוויים וסחופים על השבר שהשברנו - שבר על שבר הווה על הווה, מי שמע כזאת!  וכמו שהספידו גאב"ד אנטווערפען הרה"ג מוה"ר אהרן שיף שליט"א על תלמיד חכם שלא נספד כהלכה, דמנהגו של עולם בן סופד על אביו וכאן האבא והזקנים אבי האב ואבי האם סופדים לנפש נקי וצדיק שנקטף בדמי ימיו בדום לבו.

מ"י - ראה אלה יוצאים – כשאלה יוצאים: האדמורי"ם מטשרנוביל, מפשעו וארסק, אשלג ועוד גדולים וטובים ראו נשמה טהורה כמו זה של משה יודא לייב ז"ל – כלם כלם יצאו אחרי מיטתו.

וידום אהרן וידום נוטריקון "וי" - "דום": קודם שאגת התיסכול ואח"כ "דום" - דממה דקה של צידוק הדין.  אהה ריבון העולמים בעל הרחמים ודיין האמת, אנא עזור לנו בזו השעה לעמוד בנסיון הזאת אשר בעקבתא דמשיחא בה אנו עומדים קשה מנשוא להתחזק באמונת אומן ולהגיד כי ישר השם, צורי ולא עולתה בו חלילה וחלילה.

משה שפיר קאמרת - תמיד היה מאיר פנים לכל אדם והיה לו מילה טובה לשמח אלוקים ואנשים וכמו שהספידו ראש הישיבה הרב רעכניצער שליט"א שהבחור משה קרן עור פניו בדברם איתו ומזה האור הקרין על כל סביבתו באור יקרות.

ומשה היכן היה, משה היה עומד ומשמש - כאן נשתנה סדר הפרשה: שקודם משה היה עומד ומשמש את כל מי שנקרה בדרכו עד בוקרו של היום המר והנמהר - שכולם ענו ואמרו: "משה, היכן היה? הלא אחכה לו שיקנה עבורי חפץ פלוני", ואילו חברו עונה לעמתו "משה, היכן היה? הלא חפצתי שיסדר עבורי עם אלמוני".

ומשה היה רוא"ה – מדת ה'עין טובה' שלו היתה למופת, כל פעם ששאלו אותו פרטים על אחד מבחורי הישיבה היה מוצא בכל אחד ואחד טעם לשבח ושמר פיו ולשונו מלמסור איזה מילה לא טובה חס ושלום.

שיכל את ידיו כי מש"ה הבחו"ר ידוע מה שמספרים בחורי הקיבוץ, שכשהיו עוברים על הבחינות היה הוא היחיד שהקפיד לכסות את שמות הבחורים ששמם היה רשום בראש דפי הבחינות וכל זאת כדי שלא להיות נכשל בנדנוד של חשבון כל שהי כשהיה מציין את ידיעותיהם.

בכל ביתי נאמן הוא בתוככי הישיבה לא הכירו את היקף גמילות החסדים שפעל והפעיל, בצניעותו כי רבתה.  פתאום נזכר הבחור הממונה על גמ"ח קלטות של שיעורי תורה שמשה היה לו מפתח לכל הקלטות אבל רק השתמש בו בשעה שאף אחד מהגבאים לא היה בנמצא.  בחור אחר תופס שבעצם היה זה משה ע"ה שדאג לכך שהחתן - שאך לפני כמה ימים חזר לישיבה יקבל "ברוך הבא" כראוי וכיאות.  חבירו גם יודע לספר על מה שקרה בתחילת הזמן, כשכל הבחורים הזריזים והממולחים השיגו להם מקום לשבת סמוך ונראה להמגיד שיעור, ואחד מהבחורים שלא שפר גורלו מכל המובנים עלה בגורלו לקבל מקום במושב האחורי.  היה זה משה ז"ל שביקשו לוותר על מקומו ליד הר"מ עבור אותו חבר מפני שיחסר לו בהבנה יתירה אם יישאר לשבת בירכתי הכיתה.

כי איך אעלה אל אבי - הוריו הפצירו בו שכבר יבא לשכון בדירתם, כעת שמתכוננים להחתונה אולם הוא בשלו שעדיין מקומו בישיבה.  סוף סוף בלילה שלפני החתונה הסכים לעבור לגור אצל הוריו, כשחוזרים מהחתונה, אלא שעוד לילה אחת הוא רוצה לשהות בישיבה.  ואכן כשפתח המדריך בישיבה את שערי הבנין בפניו, אמר לו שמבקש ממנו סליחה ומחילה על שהפריעו בשעה מאוחרת שכזו "אבל מחר כבר אהיה עם אבי"....

חמד משה לאותה מיתה כמו שאמר הרה"צ ר' אלימלך בידרמן שליט"א שהקב"ה הניח למשה שיישן ויסתלק מעלמא הדין בנשיקה, כדי שלא יתעורר – ובזה פעל שכל העולם היהודי התעורר והגיע להרהור תשובה.

ויצא משה לקראת חתונת"ו של אחיו הבכור ואיננו כי לקח אותו אלקים.  רש"י הק' פירש על "ואיננו כי לקח אותו"  שחנוך נפטר לפני זמנו, מפני שקל בדעתו לשוב ולהרשיע - הרה"ק ר' שלמה מקארלין זצ"ל המתיק דברי רש"י הק' על רבו הרה"ק ר' אהרן מקארלין זצ"ל שנסתלק מעלמא הדין מפני שאנשים שבאו במגע איתו נהפכו כלם לצדיקים בהלקח מהם הבחירה בין טוב לרע, וזהו "קל בעיניו לשוב" ולהרשיע פירושו יצליח כמה שנאמר על דוד ובכל אשר יפנה ירשיע. ובדברים אלו הספידו הרה"ג ר'  יעקב ערבליך שליט"א, מגיד שיעור בישיבה שכזה היה משה יודא לייב ז"ל שבהיותו דוגמא לאחרים, היו הבחורים בסביבתו מדברים בינם לבין עצמם ששאיפתם לצמוח ולגדול בן תורה אמיתי כמוהו.

וישאלו איש לרעהו לשלום כמו שמספרים בחורי הישיבה שלמחרת הלויה נכנס יהודי קשיש לבית המדרש והתחיל להתאונן על האבדה.  כשנשאל איזה שייכות היה לו עם משה ז"ל ענה שבכלל לא הכירו ולא ידע את שמו אלא שהיום בבוקר כשהלך להתפלל חסר לו ה"גוט מארגען" שהיה למוד לשמוע מאת בחור אחד שהיה פוגשו כל בוקר משך השנתיים האחרונות. ואז – רק אז, נפל ברעיונו שהבחור כבר איננו.

ושם משפחת אמו ערבליך – נוטריקון "ערב ליך" - תמיד היתה דעתו ערבה ומעורבת עם הבריות, במתיקות טבעית שירש מההורים שליט"א, אך ורק כדי להנעים את כל הסובבים אותו בכזה ערבות שגם חברא דחברך נהנה מכח-כחו זה, וכמו שהספידו המשגיח שליט"א שבנסיעתו האחרונה לאנטווערפען על ה'אויפרופען' של אחיו הגדול, לקח עמו כרטיסי ביקור של נהג מונית מבני ברק, כדי לעזור לו בפרנסתו - בידעו שהרבה אורחים נוסעים לעת כזאת ארצה.

משה עלה למרום וכל השושבינים שהיו אמורים לרדת לעולם השפל, זקניו רבי משה הדרשן מקראקא זצ"ל, רבי נתן שפירא בעל 'מגלה עמוקות', ר' משה יעקב שארף זצ"ל דומ"ץ אושפיצין וקשאנוב ועוד גדולים וצדיקים ובתוכם סבו הקדוש אשר על שמו נקרא וכמו שהספידו הרה"ג ר' יעקב ערבליך שליט"א ריש מתיבתא בישיבה, שהרה"ק ר' משה יודא לייב מסאסוב זצ"ל לא הָיָה עליו תרעומת משום אדם בעולם, וככה עונים אחריו מקודש מקודש נצר הקדש - כלם יצאו לקבל פניו.

והיטיב"ו אחרי משה – בחורי הישיבה חבריו נמנו לדבר מצוה להיטיב עם זולתם לפי בקשת הספדנים שעוררו לקבל על עצמם להיטיב דרכיהם

וידי משה כבדים - אילו זכינו היינו נותנים יד ביד ומשתלבים ברקידה בעת חתונה עידנא דחדוותא, ועכשיו שבעוונותינו הרבים לא זכינו, עלינו לתת יד ביד כדי שידיו של משה שעושות מלחמה ביצרו וביצר המחלוקת והשנאת חינם יוכל להעתיר בעדנו בעלמא דקשוט, ומה כאן עומד ומשמש אף שם בעולם שכולו טוב עומד ומשמש ומעתיר בעד אביו ואמו השכולים, בעד החתן והכלה ההמומים, בעד שאר אחיו ואחיותיו ובעד כל משפחתו ובית ישראל כלו אמן.

מ"י יעלה בהר השם – זכה משה יודא לייב בן אהרן לעלות ולהתעלות, ומ"י יקום במקום קדשו – בקרוב נזכה שיקם ממקום מנוחתו סמוך לבית קדש הקדשים עת יקוצו וירננו שוכני עפר וכדברי הגאב"ד מאנטווערפען שליט"א שאמר בשעה שעלה לנחם את המשפחה השכולה: אמרו חז"ל שבזמן תחיית המתים יברך כל אחד ואחד מישראל ברכת הטוב והמיטיב - אותה מברכים בזמני שמחה – על כל צרה שבאתו בהווכחו שכל מה שעבר עליו צרות ורעות היה לטובה עבורו ועל הקרובים אליו ולכן צריכים להתחזק באמונה שהקב"ה לא נשא לשוא נפשי ומאתו לא תצא הרעות, עדי נזכה ל"דוי הסר וגם חרון" ואז – בעת הגאולה על"ם בשיר ירון, ולראות בנחמת ציון ולתחית המתים בעגלא דידן בב"א.

The new Shiur is called: "Shiur BeHalocho Yomis, Belz London" or similar?

This new channel is for "Halocho Yomi" that we had for the past couple of years in Belz Shteeble, Clapton Common.

There is a rota of Magiddey Shiur, as every subject is taught by our resident experts, depending on the season of the year (Chanuka, Pesach etc.) or the Halochos we are learning at a given time (Seder Night, Eruv in Summer Camp etc.).

Starting from today, those Shiurim are being recorded, as some of the regulars' schedules have changed their daily pattern and so cannot attend in person. 

Additionally, there are now many members of the public (either from other Belz Shteebles in town or from farther afield) who have heard about our excellent, clear and informative Shiurim and they want to be able to follow them on Kol HaLoshon: 03305517777.

Torah Way North London ‎Update, Adar 5766‎

Listeners to the Torah Way North London programme on Kol Haloshon, as well as the regular visitors to the Biala Shtiebel in Castlewood Road in South Tottenham were treated to an extraordinary discourse on Emunoh, Bitochon and Divine Intervention (lit. Hashgocho Protis).

The speaker was octogenarian Rabbi Yitzchok Wiesenfeld, acting Rabbi and spiritual leader to the New Shul's Minyan at the Victoria Community Centre in Egerton Road.

Spiced with sayings of our sages from previous generations and punctuated with his own insights, he skilfully wove a chain through the Parshyios relating our Egyptian stay and subsequent sojourn in the wilderness.

Regular fans will notice the growing number of recorded Shiurim on the Kol HaLoshon system, which has now reached over thirty.  These include sessions on Sundays and Thursdays, mostly delivered by local Rabbonim on a one-off basis. 

Rabbi Yaakov Mordechai Gee will deliver the coming Sunday's drosho (05/03/2006), followed by Rabbi Yechiel Fogel on the Sunday after (12/03/2006).

A new system is G-D willing now being introduced whereby there will be a regular speaker on Thursdays, every three to four weeks.  Each contributor will focus on a particular area in the vast expanses of Torah: the weekly Parsha, History, Hashkofo etc. - all with the aim to enrich the lives of our ba'aley battim and enhance their day in a Torah-dige fashion.

We now have the privilege of introducing some of the regular Maggidey Shiur for alternating Thursdays: Rabbi Mordechai Fine, Rabbi Gavriel Menashe Lamm, Rabbi Yechiel Fogel and Rabbi Yerachmiel Tzvi Halpert.

The beauty of Torah Way is that it becomes contagious; people tell their friends, who relate their new-found experience to family, who in turn make sure to bring along yet another newcomer-friend.  Indeed - regulars are being reminded to be generous, to share the joy and spread the word about the wonderful, uplifting words of wisdom they acquire in these short sessions with long ranging effect.

A special guest speaker is planned for Purim day - start it the Torah Way.  Watch out for more details on the Shul noticeboards and in the news.

Torah Way North London Update, Chanukah 5766.

Torah Way is pleased to announce the conclusion of a very successful
'Zman' this winter.  Over four hundred hours were accumulated during
the twenty-plus sessions, with a number of listeners on Kol HaLoshon
00443305517777 and other media.

This Sunday past, we had the privilege to listen to enlightening words
from Rabbi Yitzchok Greenbaum Shlita.
As usual, the lecture was given in the comfortable surroundings of the Biala
Shul in South Tottenham.
The topic this week was: The connection between Vayeshev, the weekly
Sedra and Chanukah - to invigorate the Jewish life with meaning in everyday
Avodas HaShem and Achdus: Bein Odom LaChavero.  Incidently, this was
also the topic of the previous Sunday speaker, Mr Yitzchok Silkin, of Project SEED.

For Chanukah, (which coincides with the local holidays,) we are running
a special range of daily Shiurim, in addition to the regular Sunday
and Thursday sessions.

the Light in the Holy Torah and ultimately be redeemed to bask in the
eternal Light, which will emerge with the coming of our redeemer,
speedily in our days.
