שאלות מזדמנות
Dear Rabbi Liss, Re: Sha-aloh - Someone in FPUS approached me wit the following Sha-aloh:
I have urgent hospital appointments, one of which falls on Rosh HaShono. Am I allowed to go to the hospital by public transport, so as not to miss the appointment, otherwise they will postpone it for another three months or longer, which might endanger my life. This person, aged ca. 70, is a walking miracle and a moving pharmacy… After losing a couple of stones, there is hope that life could be extended by another twenty years and – taking into account the ways of the NHS, I’m convinced that the above is an honest reflection of the medical situation. I hope that you can help me articulate a response that will assuage any qualms about braking Yontef (if needed), encourage this patient to uphold the Mitzvah of ונשמרתם מאד לנפשותיכם – all the while trying to remain within the confines of Halochoh.

Question: The Shabbos kettle is broken and the replacement kettle doesn't have a Shabbos control, so it keeps on boiling.
May we ask the security guard before Shabbos to switch it on when he arrives on Shabbos morning?
If this is not allowed how about putting it on a Time switch so that it will go on at 8:00AM Shabbos morning?
Answer: turn the dial from number six to number one and everything will be fine
